He’s been on fire in front of goal again. He’s probably not been to the levels in terms of his performances of what they were last year, as yet. But you certainly can’t complain with his goal return this year. He’s top scorer for Celtic again. In the Champions League games he seems to turn up even more.

He’s going to have to do the dirty side of the game tonight as well and help out Tierney, as is Roberts, before they do anything else going forward.

  3. Rodgers wants to be competitivepublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    Bayern Munch v Celtic (19:45)

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to BT Sport: "It's always difficult when you pick a team because everyone wants to play in the big games. The team has been pretty stable, but the injury to Jozo (Simunovic) forces us to adjust things.

"In other games we have put a midfielder in there but at this level you need out and out defenders there to stay concentrated and focus.

"In our Champions League journey over these years we want to be as competitive as we possibly can be. It's about getting the performance, competing, and improving year on year."

  4. A competition with 'special sparkle'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    Bayern Munich v Celtic (19:45)

Jupp Heynckes, who has agreed a deal until the end of the season, also lifted the Champions League with Real Madrid.

At yesterday's media conference he said: "Of course the Champions League is a competition that has a special sparkle and meaning. The club has big ambitions in it, as do the players and I.

"It's fun to work with the squad. I see how hard the players are working and it's only a matter of time before we play really good football."

  5. Heynckes at the helm againpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    Bayern Munich v Celtic (19:45)

Jupp Heynckes is back in charge of Bayern Munich for a fourth time.

The Bundesliga giants reached out to the 72-year-old club legend after sacking Carlo Ancelotti in the wake of their 3-0 loss to PSG.

Heynckes last European tie? Only winning the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley in 2013, having also delivered the league title and German Cup that season before 'retiring' on a glorious high.

And how did the megastars of FC Hollywood respond to his return? A 5-0 drubbing of Freiburg at the weekend.

  6. A smattering of Scottish successpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    Bayern Munich v Celtic (19:45)

Bayern's last game against Scottish opposition was a 5-1 home win over Aberdeen in the 2007-08 Uefa Cup for a 7-3 aggregate score

Bayern have won their past four matches against Scottish visitors in Munich and are unbeaten at home against clubs from Scotland (W5 D3)

Celtic's great rivals Rangers have taken on Bayern over nine games in European competition, including the 1967 Cup Winners' cup final. Rangers got their revenge for that 1-0 loss on the way to glory in the same competition five years later.

Danny Lennon famously fired Raith Rovers ahead in the Olympic Stadium in the 1995 Uefa Cup but Jurgen Klinsmann, who scored both goals in the first leg in Kirkcaldy, levelled soon after in a 2-1 home success.

Of course, the Dons had earlier enjoyed a memorable triumph against the Germans, with a 3-2 win at Pittodrie after a goalless draw in Bavaria on their way to Alex Ferguson's team lifting the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983.

On Celtic's only previous visit to these parts Alan Thompson headed them in front, only for Roy Makaay to score a late double to earn Bayern maximum points in the 2003-04 group stage.

The game in Glasgow ended 0-0, with Celtic going on to reach the Uefa Cup semi-finals after finishing behind the Germans and Lyon.

In all of their European adventures Celtic have never won away against a Bundesliga side (D3 L7).

I think the big performance we’re looking for tonight is Ntcham in the middle of the pitch. I was really looking forward to his contribution to this team when he came into the team first because I thought he’s got a range of passing. He looked as if he’s a player who could push on and he’s actually gone back a little bit the other way. So tonight, these nights, he’s got to step up because they paid a lot of money for him.

Can fans dare to dream of progress or is it all about finishing above the Belgians and having a crack at the Europa League after Christmas?

In nine previous attempts, Celtic have reached the last 16 three times.

Lewandowski plays in between people and it's his brain that works so quickly. He looks really fast but it's that brain. He plays off the shoulder, he comes short and he can score goals given a chance. He will float in between Lustig and Gamboa, drift off to the back post at times.

    Bayern Munich v Celtic (19:45)

    Pat Bonner
Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

He actually played very well on Saturday. I was at the game and he got a standing ovation when he came off. He was up and down the line supporting Patrick Roberts at every chance. He was making runs, he had shots on goal. But it's his defensive qualities that we're not 100% sure about with Cristian and really tonight is going to be about that, it's not going to be about, too much, getting into forward areas.

  18. Strength in depth for Bayernpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 18 October 2017

    Bayern Munich v Celtic (19:45)

Bayern Munich are missing France winger Franck Ribery and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who are both out long-term.

Spanish defensive duo Javi Martinez and Juan Bernat are also sidelined, but don't start feeling too sorry for the home side who can afford to leave the likes of Chile midfield powerhouse Arturo Vidal on the bench, along with Colombia star James Rodriguez.

Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich is said to be a weak link but will Celtic be able to exert enough pressure on the long-time understudy?
