We knew it was going to be tough for Celtic against the megastars of PSG but whenever you get to the stage when the vidiprinter has to spell out the score it's bad news.

Seven, added to the five Unai Emery's team scored in Glasgow on matchday one, wreaks havoc with the goal difference and dents confidence but that's not what matters now.

It's all about getting to the Europa League where some more even match-ups await.

Brendan Rodgers' side just need to avoid a heavy home defeat to Anderlecht on 5 December and they are there. That was the realistic mission before a ball was kicked and it's very much on.

Celtic have no time to feel sorry for themselves with a very big game coming up on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' may need to freshen up his side for the League Cup final meeting with Motherwell at Hampden.

The Steelmen are no pushovers and they will aim to get stuck in right from the start.

However, these big defeats in Europe are not exactly a new experience and Celtic tend to respond well.

Remember, that unbeaten domestic run stands at 64 games.

Brendan Rodgers was questioned on his side's shape, and whether Celtic could have set-up in a more defensive formation.

"What do you want us to do?" he replied on BT Sport. "We played five at the back – do you want us to play seven? Sometimes you just have to take your hat off in terms of the quality. Our players gave absolutely everything.

"We tried to limit the damage in the second half and I thought we did that. I'm not sure what else we could do defensively other than not make mistakes."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on BT Sport: "It is a sore one in terms of the result. This game was a strange one because there were lots of moments where we were very good, I felt.

"You have to admire their quality. We gave the ball away a couple of times in poor areas of the field and had a spell in the first half where we conceded three goals, which takes the game away from us.

"But in the second half, we had a couple of wee half chances, but they always threaten with the quality they have and scored three goals in the second half that were outstanding.

"I was proud of the players in terms of everything they put into the game. The lessons at this level are you can't give away cheap goals, and the ball is everything. But it goes down to the last game for us, which we looked for, to qualify for the Europa League.

"I said to the players afterwards, you’ve come here to play the best of the best, I’d be very surprised if they don’t make the final of this competition with the sheer quality they have.

"We had good periods, but when you make mistakes at this level you get punished, and you have to learn from that.

"I believe not having that challenge domestically is a problem in terms of what you’re up against. With [the signing of] defenders, Celtic’s first thought is a ball player, not their defensive side of the game. They’re not tested enough week in, week out.

"And when you come up against the bigger and better teams, you cant just switch it on all of a sudden, and that’s proven again on a night like tonight. I’m sorry, but you just can’t.

"And it’s almost like a lot of them don’t enjoy defending, it’s not their first thought to defend when crosses are coming into the box."

Celtic striker Moussa Dembele on BT Sport: "We’re feeling sad, we came here and tried to play but when you play these kind of players, it’s hard to get something from the game.

"I scored today but we lost the game. It’s all about the team and the club and we lost."

Celtic captain Scott Brown on BT Sport: "Some of the goals for us, the first three maybe are a little bit too sloppy but they scored some wonderful goals as well and they’ve got some top-class players.

"After the first 20 minutes when we did not too bad, we lost our shape and lost a bit of focus.

"We’ll bounce back, that’s not a problem. We knew it was going to be hard here, we’ve not done as well as we thought we were going to do, but we’ve got a huge game on Sunday now and we need to bounce back for that."

That's seven goals conceded in a match for the second season running at this stage. Barcelona did it at the Nou Camp in September 2016, with Neymar among the goals that night as well.

As far as I can tell, only one side has ever hit eight past Celtic. Sunday's League Cup final opponents Motherwell managed it way back in 1937.

"I’ve been there before where I’ve been heavily beaten and you just want the ground to swallow you up. You could see they’d all blown a fuse once the fifth goal went in, the brain stopped working, there were a lot more gaps.

"I fully expect Celtic to do really well in the Europa League, but how many years running is it going to be acceptable to get beaten by five, six and seven goals?"

James Scarff: We might have been pumped but at least we’re the only team to so far score a goal against PSG in the Champions League.

This is how the group looks now... Celtic need to avoid a big defeat at home to Anderlecht in the final game to make sure they drop into the Europa League.

PSG go to Munich next. That should be a cracker. Bayern will want revenge for a spanking in Paris.

The gulf in quality and resources was underlined with PSG bringing on three Argentina internationals as second-half substitutes.

However, Celtic did themselves no favours with their inability to hold on to the ball and a string of errors at the back.

"Celtic know they can perform at home, they know they’re the best team in Scotland, they can pass the ball and put other teams to the sword like PSG have done to them.

"They know all of that, but from the Champions League point of view, they know how far they have to come to get up to this level.

Some relief on a bleak night for Celtic - Bayern Munich have beaten Anderlecht to keep the Belgian champions without a point in the group stage, and three shy of Celtic, ahead of their meeting in Glasgow in the final round of group fixtures.

Well, that was about as one-sided as it gets. Celtic just couldn't live with the class of PSG.

Another duff pass deep in their own half and Celtic are in trouble again. More intricate passing from PSG and it needs a good block from Dedryck Boyata to prevent Javier Pastore scoring from inside the six yard box.

What a night - and not in a good way. Celtic have been torn apart by a very special team. Are we watching this season's competition winners in action? Manchester City and others may have something to say about that, but as Brendan Rodgers said yesterday, this lot are among the best of the best. It will be interesting to see the psychological effect this has on Celtic going into the League Cup final. You wouldn’t back against them bouncing straight back, but Motherwell will hope they are mentally and physically drained.

Craig Gordon is at full stretch to keep out a low strike from Giovani Lo Celso, on as a substitute for the hosts.

Lo Celso and fellow Argentine Angel Di Maria replaced Marco Verratti and Kylian Mbappe as soon as the Italian had scored but I couldn't find a gap between the goals to update you.

Leigh Griffiths also came on to take over the lonely lone striker role for Celtic.
