Adam: The predictable result of the fixture pile-up over the Christmas period is some really dour games involving tired or second string players. Is it really worth it?

John: I know the game is faster now but in the 60’s teams played on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and again on Monday with the same 11 players and only one sub.

Darren: Football has always been the best eleven you can put out against the best eleven the opposition can bring. What next? Postponing games till all star players are fit?

    Stoke 0-0 Newcastle

Matt Ritchie scuffs a shot on goal - it's on target at least.

Would the odds on three 0-0s at half-time have been worth backing?

    Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

Great ball in! Burnley left-back Charlie Taylor fizzes a great ball across the goalmouth and Ragnar Klavan defends very well, nicking it away from the waiting pack.

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on Final Score

On Final Score Danny Mills has had his say on Jurgen Klopp's team selection...

You have to do it at this period of the season when the games are coming thick and fast, 48 hours is just not enough to recover properly. Yes you can get through games but you're never at your peak and if you have a knock it's not enough - 48 hours is peak soreness, when you feel stiffest after a game and at your most tired.

Charlie Adam from the halfway line claxon!

Dusted it off after a few years in the attic. Why not sir? A good hit too, bit of fade on it and well judged length but it fizzes a yard or two over the bar.

A goal before half time? Anyone?

  10. CLOSE!published at 15:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2018

    Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

Closest we've come! Ashley Barnes ragdolls Dejan Lovren and nods it down, Scott Arfield curls the shot a yard wide from the edge of the area!

    Get Liverpool a new centre-half!

    Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

There we go again, better from Liverpool as they run at the Burnley backline but again there's a last-ditch tackle or block from the men in claret. This time it's Phil Bardsley who recovers well when it looked certain to be at the very least a shot on goal.

If you are trying to watch all three of these games at once, like I am, it's mainly close ups of goalkeepers shouting obscenities at their defence and Sadio Mane running through the midfield.

Chance! A long throw causes consternation in the Terriers backline, there's a penalty appeal for a spot of wrestling and then Wilfred Ndidi slams a shot wide from 16 yards.

    Still we await a goal...

Luke: Players earning £80k plus a week should be able to play all year round including multiple games a week.

Nathan: I don’t mind the lack of rest between games over the xmas period. I hate the fact that all the teams don’t play on the same day.

Liverpool's Fab One - Sadio Mane - runs through the middle and shoots poorly wide from about 25 yards.

  16. SITTER!published at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2018

    Stoke 0-0 Newcastle

Some misses defy reason, physiology, the laws of physics themselves.

Ayoze Perez flicks on a corner and Ciaran Clark, from within touching distance of the net, spanners a shot over. Miles over as well.

    That's a dreadful miss.

It's pretty open still at Turf Moor - Scott Arfield floats a header in on goal but it's soft and captain for the day Simon Mignolet has no problems dealing with it.

Ethan Evans: I just can't see why the Premier League cannot finish a week later to allow a little more rest for teams? Surely it is in everyone's best interest to have more competitive games with fit players.
