  1. Is four the magic number for City?published at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

This is not team news I'm afraid, because Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany is still out injured, but his shirt number is still likely to be on the minds of a few fans today.

As well as being unbeaten in domestic competition in 2017-18, City are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League, in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League. Today they launch their FA Cup campaign, but what are their chances of winning all four?

City boss Pep Guardiola has played down their chances of doing the quadruple - he does not think it will happen - but says he will talk about it, external if they can still do it in March or April.

By then, he could have his first trophy as City manager in the bag - the Carabao Cup final is on 25 February... but a Burnley win today would mean I have to use Danilo's shirt next time I try to illustrate how much silverware Pep can get his mitts on this season.

  2. Saints make two changespublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

    Fulham v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

Fulham show five changes to the side that beta Ipswich 4-1 on Tuesday - David Button, Tomas Kalas, Kevin McDonald, Lucas Piazon and Rui Fonte come in, with Marcus Bettinelli, Tom Cariney, Sheyi Ojo, Floyd Ayite and Aboubakar Kamara making way.

Mauricio Pellegrino makes just two alterations to the Southampton side that lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace on Tuesday, with Jan Bednarek and Steve Davis replacing Jeremy Pied and Dusan Tadic.

Bournemouth v Wigan Athletic (15:00 GMT)

Eddie Howe makes eight changes to the Bournemouth side that drew 2-2 at Brighton on 1 January, with Adam Smith, Steve Cook and Benik Afobe the ones to keep their places, while there is a Cherries debut for 20-year-old midfielder Connor Mahoney.

Bournemouth: Boruc, Adam Smith, Steve Cook, Ake, Brad Smith, Mahoney, Hyndman, Surman, Fraser, Afobe, Mousset. Subs: Gosling, Pugh, Callum Wilson, Federici, Ibe, Butcher, Simpson.

League One leaders Wigan Athletic, FA Cup winners in 2013, make just the one change from the side that won 1-0 at Northampton on New Year’s Day as Max Power replaces Lee Evans.

Midfielder Shaun MacDonald, who spent five years at Bournemouth, is back in the Latics squad and among the substitutes. He could make his first appearance of the season after breaking his leg in April.

Wigan: Walton, Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, James, Morsy, Power, Jacobs, Powell, Massey, Grigg. Subs: Elder, Perkins, Toney, MacDonald, Gary Roberts, Hunt, Sarkic.

  4. They've only got two sides...published at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

Exeter v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport

This afternoon might see one of the smallest-ever travelling support for West Brom.

Two sides of Exeter's St James Park are being redeveloped, including what was the away end (today it's got the TV trucks in it).

It means only around 300 Baggies fans will be here hoping to see them win for the first time in 21 games.

Pep Guardiola said he would name a strong side... and he has.

Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane all start for Manchester City with just Claudio Bravo, Danilo, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ilkay Gundogan coming into the first XI. Kevin de Bruyne drops to the bench

Burnley, meanwhile, also make four changes as Matt Lowton, Kevin Long, Ashley Westwood and Sam Vokes come in for Phil Bardsley, James Tarkowski, Steven Defour and Scott Arfield

Man City XI: Bravo, Danilo, Otamendi, Stones, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Gundogan, D Silva (c), Sane, Sterling, Aguero

  6. Burnley triumph received Royal approvalpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

Man City v Burnley (Sat, 15:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Burnley have a pretty awful recent FA Cup record.

They have not been past the fifth round since 2003 despite being a member of the top two divisions throughout that time, thus getting direct passage into the third round.

Last season, when they should have reached the last eight, they were beaten at home by non-league Lincoln City.

They have won the tournament though, back in 1914 when they beat Liverpool at Crystal Palace.

It was an historic occasion because King George V presented the trophy, the first reigning Monarch to do so.

    Stoke City

Stoke manager Mark Hughes:"We've got a difficult game, a typical cup tie, lower league, a team that's on a decent run of form coming up against a Premier League side that's not in the best form they would like, so I suppose everybody will be gearing up for a potential upset.

"It will be exactly how I've approached every League Cup game, every FA Cup game since I've been here, and that's to make sure we're really strong and we progress to the next round.

"Last weekend we lost momentum, this weekend we have an opportunity to try and gain momentum. We don't want to be on the back pages with the wrong headlines, we want to be there for the right reasons.

"We're a Premier League club, we should be progressing."

    Coventry v Stoke (15:00 GMT)

League Two promotion chasers Coventry make two changes from the win over Chesterfield. Liam O'Brien returns and loan signing Jordan Maguire-Drew makes his debut for the club.

Stoke make four changes from their defeat by Newcastle. Saido Berahino starts up front, with Peter Crouch on the bench after welcoming his newborn son this week. Stephen Ireland, Mame Diouf and Ramadan also start.

Manchester City v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche:"There are a number of clubs, including ourselves, vying to stay in the Premier League, and that does take precedence.

"But I don't see it as a shame, just a reality. I love the cup but there has to be just a pure business plan of staying in the Premier League and growing the club.

"But on the other hand, are we going there trying to win? Of course we are. Absolutely. We'll be trying our best to win."

  10. Away AGAIN?published at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

    Wolves v Swansea (15:00 GMT)

    Swansea City

This is Swansea’s ninth consecutive away FA Cup match (W3 L5) – only one team has had a longer run of away FA Cup games, with Stockport playing 11 away in a row between December 1996 and February 2001.

Olivier Lee has made 24 appearances for the League Two leaders this season while Elliot Lee has scored seven times. Who will be the hero today?

    Newcastle v Luton (15:00 GMT)

Newcastle aren't taking Luton lightly. They name a strong side for their third-round tie featuring four changes from the team that beat Stoke in the Premier League. Freddie Woodman replaces Karl Darlow in goal, Paul Dummett is in for DeAndre Yedlin at the back and Mikel Merino starts in midfield in place of Mo Diame. Dwight Gayle is in attack, with Christian Atsu dropping out of the XI.

Only one of former Newcastle player Rob Lee's sons starts the game for Luton - midfielder Olly Lee. His brother Elliot is on the bench. Danny Hylton is paired up front with James Collins. They have 28 goals between them this season in all competitions.

Exeter v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

Apparently the West Brom team bus only arrived a few minutes ago, but the team news is in...

The Baggies make four changes from their defeat by West Ham, with captain Jonny Evans left out all together. Jake Livermore is on the bench while Salomon Rondon starts up front.

League Two Exeter have top scorer Jayden Stockley in their starting XI despite breaking his nose at Newport on Monday. But captain Jordan Moore Taylor is not fit.

West Brom boss Alan Pardew:"For us it will be something to build on and gain momentum from, but I don't think it's going to relieve the pressure of winning in the Premier League, it's its own competition.

"In football terms it's important we win and get into the fourth round and create some kind of excitement for our fans, some kind of hope for them.

"There's pressure on us to win any game, but less pressure to a degree in this competition. It's a different competition that doesn't affect our league position."

  16. Cardiff losing interest in the FA Cup?published at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

    Cardiff v Mansfield (15:00 GMT)

    Dafydd Pritchard
BBC Sport Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium

It’s safe to say Cardiff City – FA Cup runners-up in 2008 and winners in 1927 – have not been gripped by the magic of the cup in recent seasons.

This is the fourth year in succession the Championship side have been drawn at home in the third round and the attendances have been poor: 5,199 against Fulham in 2017, 4,782 against Shrewsbury in 2016 and 4,194 against Colchester in 2015 – a record low for football games at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Bluebirds beat Colchester but lost against Shrewsbury and Fulham, and an upset might be in the offing today.

Mansfield, sixth in League Two, have lost only one of their last 18 games in all competitions and will be hoping to take advantage of Cardiff’s lengthening injury list.

Former Coventry defender Dave Busst is now their community manager. He’s just been talking to Mark Chapman on 5 Live about the challenges that face the club, who’ve dropped down to League Two.

A crowd of nearly 15,000 are expected for today’s game with Stoke - twice the normal attendance and the biggest of the season so far but it’s still less than half the capacity of the Ricoh.

  19. 'It needs to be looked at'published at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

Man City v Burnley (Sat, 15:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has used his programme notes ahead of today's FA Cup tie with Burnley to call for changes to the Festive fixture schedule.

Barring international weeks, City have played in every midweek since the beginning of September, a run which will continue on Tuesday when the meet Bristol City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

However, what has really annoyed him is having to play at Crystal Palace on New Year's Eve and against Watford two days later.

He said: "I know the show must go on but this is not normal. Fans come to watch players at their best. In England players are not protected. You can't play every two days. Tradition is tradition but we have to think about it."

If City are drawing near the end today, expect all out attack.
