Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has worked so hard down that right hand-side today, and he got his rewards earlier with the goal. You've got to think set-pieces are a good way for Liverpool to attack Man City because of the height they've got in their team - even without Virgil van Dijk.

  2. CLOSE!published at 44 mins

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

Better goalkeeping at the other end as Ederson comes to powerfully punch away a cross and set City on the counter, it ends with Fernandinho firing wide from 20 yards. Nobody will want this half to end.

Lewis Wilson: Great goal but Liverpool's goalkeepers are so bad, its comical.

Ben Thapa: Note to Klopp: Coming out and saying you’ve decided who your number one is doesn’t mean you don’t need a new number one.

What goalkeeper can you get for £140m? Liverpool need to upgrade their number one. Great play from Leroy Sane though.

  5. Karius has to do betterpublished at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2018

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

You've got to question Joe Gomez there, he's seen the flight of the ball, and he's gone out to meet Leroy Sane, which is the wrong decision. But I think Loris Karius has to do better, it's right at the near post and he has got to save it.

    Leroy Sane

Great play by Leroy Sane, poor from Loris Karius I'm afraid!

What a ball by Kyle Walker, fizzed from right to left, it goes over the head of Joe Gomez at right back and Sane takes it on his chest brilliantly. That forces him inside and Sane then thwacks a shot in at the near post, Karius gets a hand on it but can't keep it out. He really should have done.

Jack Beecroft: Liverpool are really playing well, great pressure. Man City look off it, first real test for them this season.

Great tackle again by Emre Can. He has games where he's fairly anonymous but he's been brilliant in this half.

This is a great game - end-to-end stuff. What an advert for the Premier League. Ederson's shown a great starting position there to come out to deny Mo Salah.

Sadio Mane works back to slide in and beat Raheem Sterling, Liverpool move it through the lines quickly and free Mo Salah in behind, in on goal, great play from Ederson again to read it and win it!

The signing of Virgil Van Dijk seems to have woken Dejan Lovren up. He's having a good game so far - hoping this doesn’t jinx it!

Hardly any real chances but such a watchable game. The pressing and harrying from both sides is almost painful to watch. Emre Can must be hurting, he's covering some serious yardage.

  14. De Bruyne tests Kariuspublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2018

    Liverpool 1-0 Man City

    Robbie Savage

That's the first time Loris Karius has really been tested today - that shot from Kevin De Bruyne. He's hit it from a similar distance to which Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored, but there's not enough power behind it and it's an easy save.

Roberto Firmino is in on goal - no! The ball just runs away from the striker inside the area and Ederson is able to fall on it.

City instantly break and find Sergio Aguero, he tees up Kevin de Bruyne and his low shot is not clean and an easy gather for Loris Karius.

  18. Man City settling to their taskpublished at 16:32 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2018

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield

Liverpool's pressure game had Manchester City on the back foot early on but Pep Guardiola's side have shown signs of settling to their task.

Raheem Sterling, rather predictably, is being roundly jeered by Liverpool's fans every time he gets the ball but he is seeing plenty of possession.

Liverpool, as always, a real danger when the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah get on the ball.

  19. Mane and Firmino looking menacingpublished at 16:32 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2018

    Liverpool 1-0 Man City

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

The interchange between Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino has been unreal so far. For once, Mane doesn't have the pace to beat his man, in Kyle Walker, so it's important Firmino helps him out.

  20. CLOSE!published at 31 mins

Well played the Ox! Great strength and determination to win the ball on the right, beat Danilo and fire in a dangerous cross to the near post where Roberto Firmino skims a header wide.
