    Joleon Lescott
Former England defender on BBC One

He likes to control everything, in a good way, he demands respect and he demands effort be put in constantly in training. Throughout the goals they've conceded recently they've shown a lack of communication at times, he can fill that gap.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock has paid tribute to former Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne and Jimmy Armfield in his programme notes following their passing this week - he describes Jimmy as simply “football mad” and says Cryne saved his old club from administration - and adds “its poignant that we can put our hands together (in a minutes applause) for them ahead of such a big game”

  3. 'We can concentrate on the league now'published at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle

Rafael Benitez speaking to BBC Sport said: “We did well in the first-half, had chances, put them under pressure. We made a mistake in the counter-attack for the first goal and after second goal we were unlucky. There is a big difference to play Chelsea at their home and be 2-0 down.

“I am pleased with the team in the first-half and disappointed we lost the game, now we concentrate on the league”.

On the prospects of signing new players in January, he said: “I hope we can do something.”

  4. FA Cup in fine health in south Walespublished at 15:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

The state of the FA Cup – its worth, its standing with fans and clubs these days – is often a major talking point on weekends like this and, in south Wales, it’s safe to say the competition is in fine health right now.

Last night, League Two Newport County held Tottenham to a draw at a riotously atmospheric Rodney Parade – an occasion which Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino clearly revelled in for what he described as its “pure passion”.

Just a short drive down the M4, there will be another sell-out crowd as Championship side Cardiff City host the Premier League’s free-scoring runaway leaders Manchester City this afternoon.

There’s a real buzz at the Cardiff City Stadium and an intriguing clash of styles awaits in the dugout, with Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock – renowned for his teams’ rugged approach – taking on Pep Guardiola, the architect of some of the most aesthetically pleasing teams in football history.

Cardiff v Manchester City (16:00 GMT)

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock on Manchester City: "They're lovely to watch. When you can buy the best players in the world, it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be successful. Pep is improving his team each year.

"My favourite player in the country is David Silva, has been for years. I've always loved his attitude and ability to change a game.

"It's an experience to play against these lads. It's our cup final and we're going to do the best we can on Sunday."

When Cardiff City won promotion to the Premier League in 2013, they celebrated with this banner.

Fans were delighted to be moving away from Manish Bhasin's Football League show and onto Saturday's prime-time Match of the Day with Gary Lineker.

  10. 'Michy took his chance'published at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill speaks to BT Sport: "It was decent in the end. I thought we started a bit rusty. We needed that win and to progress is the most important.

"We need to try to reach the final rounds in this having gone out of the EFL Cup the other night so this is very important.

"After the first 10-15 minutes we got on with it. Especially Michy, he took his opportunity today."

Michy Batshuayi: "It's very good for the team and I'm very happy. When I have a chance I want to take it. I work everyday and today I am very happy here. I don't know (on his future), it's better you speak to Conte."

Cardiff v Manchester City (16:00 GMT)

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock makes two changes from last Saturday’s goalless Championship draw at Sheffield Wednesday as Callum Paterson and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing replace Sol Bamba and the cup-tied Yanic Wildschut.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola makes four changes from Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final win at Bristol City. Danilo, Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling replace Oleksandr Zinchenko, John Stones, David Silva and Sergio Aguero. Without Aguero, it looks like a fluid front three of Sterling, Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva.

Cardiff XI: Etheridge; Richards; Ecuele Manga, Morrison, Bennett; Paterson, Grujic, Ralls; Mendez-Laing, Hoilett, Zohore.

Man City XI: Bravo; Walker, Kompany, Otamendi, Danilo; Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Bernardo Silva, Sterling, Sane.

As Rafa leaves after this, having been comfortably swatted aside by one of his former clubs, with only a relegation battle to look forward to for the rest of the season and an owner who doesn't really seem to care either way, surely he must be wondering if Newcastle was a wise career move?

  16. 'Men against boys'published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on Radio 5 live

It was almost men against boys in the end, although there were lots of youngsters on the field. It is just what Chelsea needed, it's a very professional performance and that midfield pairing from Leicester is starting to look very good between Kante and Drinkwater.

Early on, Newcastle looked fairly well organised. Where they will get goals from is what it will come down to in terms of the Premier League. They'll have to buy someone in the transfer window as they're sadly lacking at the top of the team.
