    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

This game has lost the limited zip it had. Good news for Chelsea, who are playing in first gear, while smoking a cigar, on a deckchair, reading a book, yawning...

Danny Drinkwater hooks a shot wide from 20 yards. Never got hold of it.

Liam: No idea why Newcastle are chasing Jorgensen from Feyenoord, when we could probably sign Batshuayi for the amount of money we'll end up paying for Jorgensen.

Hoagey: Tipping Newcastle for a better second half after a rousing halftime by Rafa. Final score 3-1.

I just posted that Batshuayi looks a good addition for someone Liam. A no brainer if Chelsea will let him leave on loan or permanently.

Karl Darlow with a mighty fine save, diving to his left to palm away a Macos Alonso volley.

Alonso watched a cross from the right expertly and then lashed it first time.

It's interesting, when you lose possession of the ball you contest it, you put pressure on it but Gayle isn't contesting the ball nearly enough and they're waiting 10 minutes to get the ball back. That's not good enough if Newcastle are going to get back into this game.

  5. Postpublished at 55 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey heads well over from 12 yards, Henry Saivet drills a shot miles wide from 40 yards. Marginal improvement from the away side.

  6. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

By my reckoning, Michy Batshuayi has only started 10 games this season across the league, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League.

He has 10 goals. Is this man, peripheral at the Bridge, not a very good buy for any side in need of goals?

Maybe a loan? I'm thinking Everton, Newcastle, or other sides who would give him a starting place.

  7. Watch: Batshuayi's deflected effort doubles Chelsea's advantagepublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Here's the moment Michy Batshuayi doubled Chelsea's lead with a deflected effort off Jamaal Lascelles.

If you're just joining us, he's bagged a brace today.

  8. CLOSE!published at 51 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Pedro pulls down a poor clearance on the edge of the box and whips a left-footer just over the bar. Very close. Should have hit the target.

  9. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

It's hard to pin Chelsea back at home. When they've scored first, they've only lost two out of 45 games.

By the way, I need to make a brief apology. Earlier I used a graphic which said Chelsea have not lost in their last 10 FA Cup games at home. Sadly, that should have said they've not lost in their last 10 FA Cup games against Premier League sides at home.

A few Bradford City fans have been on. Big up Bradford.

Newcastle don't look like ending the run against Premier League sides any time soon. All Chelsea in the early second-half exchanges.

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

From what I can see, you can win £250 for a £1 stake on Newcastle to win at this stage. If I were you'd I'd save the £1.

No changes as far as I can see at the break. Chelsea start nicely, switching the ball with a flowing move from right to left.

  11. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Antonio Conte is back in his dugout, we're back underway.

This one is over is it not?

Ken, Newcastle: You can always guarantee that any striker who needs a goal will be welcomed with open arms by Newcastle. It never changes.

Ricky: If Newcastle come back, I'd like them to win 4-2, like Bradford did at the Bridge in 2015.

Kyle: Whatever happens, I hope Newcastle come out in the second half and have a right go at Chelsea. After the second goal it was encouraging to see Newcastle getting back on the attack and we were unlucky not to make it 2-1.

    Martin Keown

You can't really see a way back in for Newcastle unless someone makes a serious mistake. It's so far a very professional performance from Chelsea and it looks like job done.

Jonathan Overend will shortly be interviewing Nathan Blake on BBC Radio 5 live.

Blake, of course, scored a famous winner for Cardiff against Man City in the Cup many years ago.

Will Cardiff pull off a shock later today?

  17. Postpublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

The state of play in that opening 45.

Two well-crafted goals are the difference. It's almost like one side spends a good bit of wonga on talent while the other looks to run a tight ship.

  18. Postpublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Willy Caballero made five saves in that first half. As I said, 2-0 is harsh on Newcastle.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Chelsea survive again in half-time injury time. Willy Caballero turns a stabbed effort at goal from within a melee of players around the post.

It was Chancel Mbemba who prodded it goalwards.

  20. 'Ruthless'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on Radio 5 live

They are ruthless on the counter attack.

In the end it just comes off Lascelles who attempts to make the block, they really are outstanding on the break and it was a great early ball from Hazard. Hazard was so clever, he drew the Newcastle players in before switching it to Batshuayi and it takes a massive deflection.

He's there to score goals, Batshuayi, but you need a bit more from him. This will give him the platform to build from.
