Ben Aitkenhead: VAR is stop-start, ruins emotional immediacy that is lifeblood of football, still controversial because subjective. It will ruin the game.

Hereward: VAR is ruining the flow of the game. I'm sure Americans would love it but it's (literally) not cricket.

You've got to say that's good defending there - Jonny Evans making up for his earlier mistake. It's the fifth or sixth chance Liverpool have had already. What a game!

  3. CLOSE!published at 32 mins

    Liverpool 1-2 West Brom

    This game is simply incredible.

Mo Salah takes the ball down in the box, skips past Ben Foster but he is pushed wide.

He passes it back to Roberto Firmino but the Brazilian's shot is blocked by Evans and is away for a corner.

This is ridiculous. Regardless of the fact that I think both VAR decisions were wrong, this is interrupting what was looking like an amazing game of cup football. Please can we not keep this ridiculous addition to the game.

So much drama - it's stunning here. It's been an extraordinary start to a game of football. There's enough talking points for three games of football.

I wish the fans inside the stadium knew what was going on, because they'd be absolutely loving it.

Dennis Ethan: This VAR is boring and spoiling the flow of football. I don't like it all.

    Boring?!

Liverpool could have been 3-1 down, and now with VAR, they could be 2-2. If I was watching that back, I'd be saying that's a penalty, there's a clear drag back. A lot of people will be hating this - but boy is there a lot of tension - the theatre is quite incredible!

Callum: So Liverpool spend £75M on a CB and still can't stop conceding goals...

Dan: I thought Liverpool were meant to have improved the defence with a £75m signing?

    Penny for Jurgen's thoughts...

    Liverpool 1-2 West Brom

    Pat Nevin

I'm thinking the goalkeeper is absolutely being stopped from going to get the ball there. Simon Mignolet didn't come out at all, he had a player in front of him, he was stopped from coming out. They've looked at it - and they think it's a block.

  14. goal

    VAR deems it off-side

Craig Dawson thought he had scored from the corner but Craig Pawson uses VAR to confirm Gareth Barry was off-side and interfering with play.

Liverpool are finding plenty of space out wide. This time it's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who escapes down the right.

He fires a ball into the box but it skips past everyone.

    I sense another goal coming...

What a ball from Alberto Moreno!

The Liverpool left-back slips a delightful pass through to Sadio Mane down the line but the forward can't find Salah in the box.

West Brom get the ball back and Kieran Gibbs has a pop from distance, because, well, why not? Anything can happen in this game...

I've just seen Virgil van Dijk playing in a left-wing position... You know what - I'm all for it - it's a cup tie after all.

An apt representation of how this game's gone so far...
