How do you replace this man?

Before the transfer window had even opened, the fans, the board and the manager all knew we needed to bring in reinforcements to bolster our squad - and good ones at that. We've brought in Joao Mario - on loan - from Inter Milan while we've said goodbye to wantaway striker Diafra Sakho. Great. But with Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini now out for a while, and Michail Antonio yet to return, we are in desperate need of players who can make things happen up top.

    With this man?

January is never a good month to sign players and we need to let players go before we can recruit but we need bodies and we need them now. We don't want a bargain, we don't want loans, we want the owners to pay what they have to, to bring in the players that can come in and help us kick on.

  10. Promes to Southampton looking unlikelypublished at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Richard Winton
    BBC Sport

Southampton are not confident of completing a deal for Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes before the window closes, with any deal now more likely to be struck in the summer.

The Russian club have rejected three bids for the 26-year-old Netherlands international, who BBC Sport understands has asked to leave Spartak during three separate meetings with the club president. The unsettled Promes also became embroiled in a training-ground fight this week.

Should the deal falter, Southampton are unlikely to look elsewhere at this stage.

Motherwell have rejected an increased bid of £375,000 from Celtic for goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

The offer was submitted on Tuesday evening but still does not meet the Well's valuation of the 29-year-old.

Manager Stephen Robinson said it would be a "nightmare scenario" to lose his goalkeeper on transfer deadline day.

"It would have to be a very good bid to let Trevor go," Robinson said. "It would certainly make things very difficult for me."

Liverpool kicked things off in the January transfer window by splashing out a world record fee for a defender, signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m.

Van Dijk had a dream debut, grabbing the winner against Everton in the FA Cup but hasn't quite yet plugged the leaky Liverpool defence. The Reds have conceded three goals in the two games he has played since the Toffees' fixture.

  20. How will Liverpool's business affect their season?published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Liverpool

We've run some of this month's transfer dealings through the SAM (Sports Analytics Machine), the super-computer built by Ian McHale, professor of sports analytics at the University of Liverpool.

Here's what it made of the goings on at Anfield:

Liverpool losing playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona will mean a drop in points of about 2.3 between now and the end of the season. Enough to put a top four place at risk?

    Coutinho goalImage source, Getty Images

However, SAM reckons that Liverpool losing Coutinho and gaining Virgil van Dijk will mean a drop of 1.3 points between now and the end of the season. The impact on making the top four is interesting: the probability has decreased by 8% to 52%.
