Chelsea
We've run some of this month's transfer dealings through the SAM (Sports Analytics Machine), the super-computer built by Ian McHale, professor of sports analytics at the University of Liverpool.
Here's the machine's take on Chelsea's very human pursuit of a striker...
Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll would officially bring nothing to Chelsea but Roma's Edin Dzeko would bring two more points to the table - that is quite a lot in half a season.
The arrival of Dzeko would also pretty much guarantee Champions League football, according to the computer. He would increase their probability of finishing in the top four from 88% to 93%.

Badou Ndiaye’s people remain optimistic that his move to Stoke from Galatasaray will be completed today.
A £15 Million fee is agree, personal terms are sorted and the Senegal international has been in Stoke since yesterday.
The complication is a work permit as Ndiaye hasn’t played enough international games over the last two years.
But my understanding from the player’s side is that they’re expecting it to be worked out.
They’re even talking about it being sorted this afternoon.
Ndiaye would certainly add energy to the Stoke midfield. He’s impressed in Turkey.

Gillingham are hopeful of re-signing Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean Clare, who scored one goal in 26 appearances during a loan spell with the League One club earlier this season.
Gillingham chairman Paul Scally told BBC Radio Kent:
“We are trying to pull a couple of players in. We are working on the Sean Clare deal, getting Sheffield Wednesday to release him, but that is proving some challenge.
“He has gone back there and is out of contract in the summer but they are not willing to let him go yet.
“We had a late night phone call on Tuesday night that might change things. We have got two or three other deals we are looking at.”

Sean Graham: Thank you Peter Crouch for holding a door open at the co-op in Shrewsbury. I know you were in a hurry.
Sean Graham: I’ve just seen Ibrahimovic stood outside a pet shop in Shrewsbury. He said he was on his way to sign something and he needed to borrow a pen.
We've received two tweets from Sean this morning. Seems like there's a lot going on in Shrewsbury...
As of 09:00 GMT, the Premier League as a whole have spent a bonkers £1.7bn.
This January so far, they have shelled out a record £270m. That should reach around £350m before the end of the day, right?
Crazy numbers.

Chelsea
Don't forget there are seven Premier League matches this evening - including Chelsea v Bournemouth.
Antonio Conte has some business to do and isn't impressed that his attempts to bolster his squad could be hampered by the pesky business of playing.
Chelsea
Unless you have recently returned from outer space you'll probably know that Chelsea are in the market for a striker. Judging by the players we've been linked with, the key requirements appear to be "be over 6ft and have access to a pair of football boots".
Realistically I'd expect to end up with either Dzeko or Giroud, depending on who blinks first on the length of Dzeko's contract and where the cards fall in the Aubameyang, Batshuayi and Giroud deals.
A deal for Emerson Palmieri, the Roma left back, is sealed, but I wouldn't expect him to move ahead of Marcos Alonso in the pecking order.
There are still question marks in midfield, but I'd expect the club to wait on the form of Bakayoko to improve and point to the signing of Ross Barkley as proof that we have enough in that department.
If we fail to land any of these targets, I wouldn't like to be anywhere near Antonio Conte's office on Thursday morning.

So, what does Michy Batshuayi's move to Borussia Dortmund mean for the transfer market?
Well, the Bundesliga side were only going to sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal if they found a replacement for him, that looks to have happened now.
In turn, Chelsea's hunt for a big front man could be completed by the Gunners allowing striker Olivier Giroud to join their London rivals.
Slowly but surely, it is all coming together.

Luke Deards: If Wenger sells Giroud to Chelsea he’s insane. Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch, big strikers always kill Arsenal. The big sexy man will be a force at Chelsea and come back to haunt us twice a year.
Ed Clarke: Seems I'm in the minority of Arsenal fans who would prefer Giroud to stay than Aubameyang to come....classic Plan B striker with great attitude vs pace merchant with dubious attitude. Not convinced.
Andrew Robertson: Arsenal have shipped more goals than WBA (bottom club) and on away form would be 9th shouldn't we be IN for DEFENDERS? Paying full price for auba right at the last minute and strengthening 2 of our RIVALS in ONE transfer WINDOW. welcome to the new structure!

Tick, tock, tick, tock.

Here are a couple of moves on the continent to keep an eye on.
Inter still really want Javier Pastore from PSG but it could be a complicated deal to complete before the deadline so the Italian media are talking about Atletico Madrid’s Nicolás Gaitán as a possible alternative.
A Pogba could be on the move. Paul’s brother Florentin’s deal at Saint-Etienne runs out at the end of the season and he may go to the Turkish club Gençlerbirligi today.
And at 3pm in Turkey, Konyaspor will hold a “signing ceremony” to officially complete the deal to sign former Barcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o from Antalayspor.
It’ll be the 36-year-old’s 12th club.

Boris: Just seen Peter Shilton arriving at the Emirates. Arsene Wenger obviously looking for experienced cover for the out of form youngster Petr Cech.
David Hird: My mate works in a pet shop in South West London and he just sold a hamster (with cage and BOGOF bags of food) to Michy Batshuayi.
Jack: Just picked up a bacon barm from the bakery in Liverpool and who’s next to me? Riyad Mahrez ordering himself a breakfast pasty - says Jurgen Klopp's late interest has swayed him to Anfield.
