  1. 'The most Spanish manager in Italy'published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

Sevilla v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

We used to call Vincenzo Montella the most Spanish manager in Italy. Now Spain call him the guy that has introduced Italian tactics to La Liga.

Although he was very effusive in his praise for Jose Mourinho, he plays a lot more like Guardiola, horizontal passing, high up the pitch, very compact. He’s a bit more direct in Sevilla; he’s had problems defensively, and I think he is still going to have problems today.

Sevilla's manager is Vincenzo Montella, the former Roma and Italy (and briefly Fulham) striker.

He replaced Eduardo Berizzo, who led the club to second place in Group E, and then got sacked - a week after returning from cancer surgery.

"I'm very excited to be facing Mourinho, he was a pioneer in football tactics and I studied him a lot when I was starting out as a coach," Montella said.

Montella was only out of work for a month before he was appointed by Sevilla - after he was sacked by Italian giants AC Milan.

Mourinho said: "Montella is Italian - they know how to organise their team from the defensive point of view."

On paper, Sevilla are having a decent season. They qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing second in Group E to Liverpool.

In La Liga, they are fifth and still only six points behind Real Madrid. And they are in the Copa del Rey final, where they will play Barcelona.

But in December, they sacked Eduardo Berizzo - who had only been in charge for six months - one week after he returned from surgery following being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

They have won eight of their 13 games since he was replaced by Vincenzo Montella.

There was also an interesting player left on the bench for Sevilla. Wissam Ben Yedder scored six of their 12 Champions League goals - only Real Madrid ledge Cristiano Ronaldo scored a higher percentage of his team's goals in the group stages.

Ben Yedder is a sub, while Luis Muriel starts as the centre forward.

Sevilla boss Vincenzo Montella has joked his team may have to "tie up" Alexis Sanchez to stop the Manchester United forward in Wednesday's Champions League last-16 first-leg.

The 29-year-old Chile international has scored once in five appearances since his January move from Arsenal.

"I remember him really well from his stay in Italy [with Udinese]," said former Roma striker Montella.

"He has improved his style a lot during his career and I think he can be a really good player in transition. I think they have really good speed in attack.

"Well, maybe we can lock him up with a padlock or tie him up with rope."

You never really know what you’re going to get. You don’t know what Sevilla is going to turn up, and that presents a problem for a manager who is preparing for them.

It’s not like ‘this is the same team every week, this is their system and you know what to expect’. You really don’t with Sevilla.

My one concern for them is that they are going up against a Manchester United side that is very physical, whereas aside from Steven Nzonzi, they’re all technical, small players. But that in itself could play to their advantage.

As soon as a player gets left out, his agent’s on the phone to people asking "why has he been left out?" - then people start getting touted, they say "he’s not happy". I totally get that that’s what happens now.

We’re in a day and age where players go on strike if they’re left out. They get interest from somewhere else and they don’t want to play anymore.

  9. 'Paul created some doubts'published at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

Sevilla v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

Jose Mourinho has been speaking to BT Sport about Paul Pogba's absence from the starting XI tonight.

Mourinho is a bit prickly initially, as the interviewer asks for a reason why Pogba isn't starting.

"You always go to the one that doesn't start," says Mourinho.

"McTominay is working hard every day, he is feeling good, feeling strong. He played the last match for 90 minutes. Paul was not able to play last Saturday and we believe this is the kind of game of course demands quality but is the kind of game I think a player must feel 100%"

Tactical reasons left out? "I don't say so much tactically. We are playing with three midfield players and Paul could play perfectly in this role... but Paul created some doubts by not playing on Saturday, by not playing by his own decision - he was not feeling good, and created some doubts."

*English-born McTominay has previously said “I’m probably more Scottish than I am English" but has yet to be capped by anyone at any level.

We will also be bringing you goal updates from the night's other last 16 tie between Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma.

Roma manager Eusebio di Francesco - whose side are third in Serie A - says they have increased the intensity of their training in recent weeks.

"It adds a small element of risk but the idea is to fill up the tank for the business end of the campaign and I hope to see the benefits on the pitch," he said.

In contrast, Ukrainian league leaders Shakhtar were given a day off after Friday's 5-0 league win over Chornomorets.

Paul Pogba was also dropped to the bench a lot when he was first at Juventus. He was turning up to training late, and they wanted to turn him into a professional.

He needed to understand that ‘this is Juventus, you work hard and are professional', working alongside with legends like Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo at the time. 'Show you deserve a place'. Conte was really important in helping Pogba.

Hossam: No player should be guaranteed a place in the first 11, Pogba needs to focus on football and his performances.

Alex: Not sure why it’s a surprise that a player who missed a game through illness starts the next on the bench? Pogba needs match fitness and form, starting him in one of the biggest games of the season after he’s been absent would seem a bit irresponsible.

Managers and coaches see players every day in training. We know Paul Pogba is a really good player. We see him play and see the stats and think ‘get him in the team’. It is obvious Jose Mourinho doesn’t feel that way. Maybe he has seen him in training and thinks ‘you’re not quite there yet’.

Speaking yesterday, United boss Jose Mourinho said he did not buy into the theory that Paul Pogba needed to justify his £89m price tag in huge games - like the Champions League knockout stages.

The former Juventus midfielder's form has been questioned and he missed their last game against Huddersfield through illness.

"I don't think it's fair to speak about the responsibilities of a player," Mourinho said.

"I don't even like the fact that the player that cost X millions doesn't have the same responsibility as the player that cost three times X.

"I think the responsibility is for everyone, so I don't like that kind of approach. I understand for you [the media], but not for me.

"When I decide a team to play, I don't look to the age, I don't look to the salary, I don't look to the transfer fee, because I think that's not also fair."

Maybe that last sentence might have been a hint that he wouldn't start?

Jack: Ridiculous line-up from United. All three midfielders are solid but there’s no creativity there. None of the front three want to run in behind, what a waste

Scott: I think Mourinho's management style is outdated. His man management at the moment is poor. Shaw broken, Mkhitaryan broken, Pogba next? Name a player besides Lingard who is playing better?

  20. 'Can Mourinho put his ego aside?'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

I will continue to feel Paul Pogba is one of the best midfielders in the world. Maybe he hasn’t quite shown that in spells since he has been at United. Is he playing under the kind of manager that will put his ego to the side and realise he is dealing with a world player, in terms of the price tag, global appeal, all of that?

Not saying he’s treated him badly, but Pogba thrives on confidence. I want to know why he hasn’t started him today. There is no one better in that midfield than him. He will make that midfield better.

There’s a bigger picture with him. If you let him play through this bad spell he will come good.
