  1. 'Davide with us forever'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    England v Italy (20:00 BST)

It was an emotional evening in Manchester last Friday as Italy paid tribute to the late Davide Astori before they went on to lose 2-0 to Argentina.

The message "Davide with us forever" adorned the Azzurri shirts in their first match since the Fiorentina captain's death on 4 March.

Italy will wear the same inscription on their kit when they face England tonight.

Eric Dier is a very surprising captain as he is not good enough to be in the team! Poor centre half, average midfielder!

Being in the England squad is very different from when I first made my debut, there are more team meetings for example, and that's a big part of these call ups.

It's not just about how you do on the pitch, it is about how you are on the training ground and at the hotel, and bringing more character to the squad.

Simon: Seems to me that Southgate has settled on his system as well as his core players. Smart move to use these friendlies to see who can slot in and out, just as would be required in a tournament. Fantastic opportunity for Tarkowski!

Kev: Good luck to England tonight, my thoughts are with those who are on the bench. It’s a great chance to see how the fringe players can play on the centre stage. Why not give them a chance? The main body of the team will almost pick itself. Come on give them 45 mins.

    England v Italy (20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Big night here at Wembley for Burnley's James Tarkowski as his gets his England debut against Italy - quite a rise for the defender and reward for an outstanding season at Turf Moor.

There is irony, too, in that Tarkowski has now overtaken Michael Keane in the England reckoning. Keane had England ambitions of his own but his progress has stalled after a mixed first season at Everton following his £30m move from Burnley,

England manager Gareth Southgate had a very satisfactory night on Friday with victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam - and even though Italy are not at this summer's World Cup in Russia, they always provide a formidable test.

Gareth Southgate makes five changes to the England team that defeated the Netherlands on Friday night. There's a debut for James Tarkowski while Jack Butland, Ashley Young, Jamie Vardy and skipper Eric Dier are also included from the start.

England XI: Butland, Walker, Stones, Tarkowski, Trippier, Dier, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lingard, Young, Sterling, Vardy

Luigi Di Biagio has also made five changes to the Azzurri line-up that went down to Argentina on the same evening. Most noticeably Italy's veteran 40-year-old captain Gianluigi Buffon makes way for 19-year-old AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Big boots to fill those!

Italy XI: Donnarumma, Zappacosta, Rugani, Bponucci, De Sciglio, Pellegrini, Jorginho, Parolo, Candreva, Insigne, Immobile

Paul Pogba scored a 30-yard free-kick as France beat World Cup hosts Russia in a friendly in St Petersburg.

Didier Deschamps made seven changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Colombia on Friday, including midfielder Pogba being recalled from the bench.

The Manchester United star set up Mbappe's opener and then curled home a long-range free-kick.

He had a message for his late father on his T-shirt when celebrating his goal.

  11. What happened last time?published at 19:05 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Netherlands 0-1 England

Jesse Lingard's first international goal extended England's unbeaten run to seven games and gave them a deserved friendly victory against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

Southgate's team selection raised eyebrows in a defensive context - particularly his use of Walker in a three-man defence rather than in his accustomed right-back position.

But Southgate can be satisfied with how his system worked, despite the early disruption when Gomez went off, as the Three Lions largely dominated.

    Wales 0-1 Uruguay

England and Scotland are in action tonight but Wales faced tough opponents in Uruguay in the China Cup final yesterday.

Edinson Cavani's goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as Ryan Giggs lost his second match in charge.

But a 6-0 rout of China and a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uruguay will go down as a hugely positive start to Giggs' reign.

    England v Italy (20:00 BST)

    Raphael Honigstein
European football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

I just don’t see that much quality in England's team. I think they have a talented team, and some exciting young players, but if you are looking throughout the whole squad, especially in central area, it gets a bit thin.

The history of the World Cup is teams having that extra depth, if some player for whatever reason doesn’t perform, you have someone who can step in on a similar level. If Harry Kane turns up two years ago like he did at the Euros and just cannot perform, who will come in?

There is no doubt that they are one of the best eight or 10 teams in the world and that is where they should be. Beyond that I just don’t quite see it.

  17. 'Quarter-finals a success'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    England v Italy (20:00 BST)

    Rory Smith
Chief soccer correspondent for The New York Times on BBC Radio 5 live

The quarter-finals should be a success for England. That means you are one of the best eight teams in the world. That is not a failure, and too often in the past it has been treated like that.

They don’t have a 10 like Ozil, they don’t have a 10 like the 14 players who play at 10 for Spain, they don’t have Messi, they don’t have Neymar. Jack Wilshere is a very good player, but he’s not in that class and ultimately that will tell in those games.

You look at that squad and there are 14 or 15 players who are very good players, but there is a limit.

After a fairly uneventful opening half England have raised the tempo. And the shift in gear has brought an opening goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, on his return to Bramall Lane.

James Maddison was the catalyst with a wonderful through ball and the Everton forward slipped it past Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

The last time England defeated the Azzurri, in August 2012, Jack Butland became England's youngest ever international goalkeeper at 19 years 158 days.

That particular distinction had been held by Billy Moon who was 64 days older on his debut in 1888. Butland conceded once and was replaced by John Ruddy at half-time. England won the match 2–1.
