Former Premier League referee Chris Hoy on BT Sport: "It is what they call illegal feinting. He is quite rightly carded. The decision is right albeit unpopular."

  2. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 28 mins

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

This is unreal. Son Heung-min stops and starts in his run-up and slots it home. Again, we all think it's a goal. But the referee rules it out. And books Son.

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

    Mark Schwarzer
Ex-Chelsea keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Trippier falls in the box but the contact starts outside it. It's taking some time, and you can hear the fans booing in the background. But ultimately, if you get the right result I think it's worth the wait. It's about the lack of information though.

  4. PENALTY TO SPURSpublished at 26 mins

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

Wow. The referee and VAR decide that because the foul continued into the area, it's a penalty to Spurs.

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

Boos around Wembley while we wait to find out if it's a free-kick or penalty.

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

Kieran Trippier is pulled down by Matt Done. It started outside the box and ended inside it. Another VAR consultation...

  7. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Spurs 1-0 Rochdale

Bit of showboating now as Erik Lamela does some tricks. I hope Spurs haven't forgotten they threw away a lead in the first game.

  8. goal

GOAL - Spurs 1-0 Rochdalepublished at 24 mins

    Son Heung-min

    We actually have a goal.

Erik Lamela picks out Son Heung-min, who cuts in onto his right foot and curls a shot home from about 14 yards out.

    Nothing to VAR there.

  9. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 21 mins

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

Spurs winger Lucas Moura breaks into the box, dances past a couple of defenders and Harrison McGahey sticks his arm around Lucas, who goes down - easily.

The referee lets play go on until the ball goes out of play. Then he does a little VAR chat with a man in the ear-piece. And decides to stick with his initial no penalty ruling.

    Tottenham 0-0 Rochdale

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Wembley

    Heavy snow flurry at Wembley.

Absolutely freezing here so I am very impressed at the five players wearing short sleeves and no gloves.

    Spurs win 3-2.

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

    Mark Schwarzer
Ex-Chelsea keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Rochdale will be very happy with Tottenham trying to attack from that deep. They've defended well. They just need to stay solid, stay compact and not dive in.

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

If there's one thing I've learned from working on the FA Cup so far in 2018, it's that a lot of fans do not like VAR.

Chris Baldwin: Surely VAR is there to fix obvious errors or black and white decisions. That was 50-50 at best.

Jack, a very disgruntled Spurs fan from Cardiff: That is an absolute disgrace. Decisions can only be overturned if they are clear and obvious errors? Looks to me that VAR is really just one referee's opinion over another. The ref didn't even go and review it. I've been an advocate of this system up until now but that's just made a mockery of the whole thing.

Jeet Padaruth: If that is VAR’s definition of “clear and obvious”, there will be no more goals in football

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

Another attack for Rochdale, Andrew Cannon is played in. Spurs defender Danny Rose takes a risk with a sliding tackle but he gets it right and wins the ball.

    No need for VAR there....

Theo: VAR being used incorrectly again... you have to get these decisions right or it just makes a mockery of the review system.

Phil Knight: What a ridiculous decision. Where was the foul there? Another wrong VAR call.

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

Spurs win a corner as Callum Camps holds off Erik Lamela. Corner is cleared though.

Zed: VAR seems like an odd acronym for "indescribably ridiculous ludicrous decision"? Please get rid of this nonsense!

Adam: I find VAR just baffling at times

    Martin Howcroft: RIP VAR

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

Rochdale's first chance as Matt Done is picked out with a great ball over the top, he chests it down and then lashes the ball across goal and out for a goal-kick. Ian Henderson wasn't too far away from getting on the end of that shot.

It's snowing at Wembley now, I should mention.

John, Epsom: Arsenal Fan - but that VAR decision was a joke - funny though!

Anon: VAR IS RIDICULOUS... they were clearly pulling each other definitely not “clear and obvious”

Stuart, Colchester: Does VAR stand for Very Average Reasoning from the person looking at the monitor? Ridiculous.

    Spurs 0-0 Rochdale

Son Heung-min had a shot blocked after play finally restarted.

If this game had been played at Rochdale, Spurs would be leading 1-0 by the way. Dale's ground doesn't have the equipment VAR needs.
