...that is not a mistype kids. England were actually decent in a tournament once upon a time.

Unfortunately those of you under 30 probably won't remember too much about it.

Cool Britannia! Oasis! Alexander McQueen! The Spice Girls! Baddiel and Skinner! Oh, we had it all...

And then, on a balmy summer evening in west London, this happened...

Adam Oldroyd: Plenty of pace and flair up front for England tonight , but the midfield has as much bite as those 2 old men from the Muppett Show!

Johnny Magrinho: So we’re starting with 3 and a half full backs, 1 centre back, and no striker. There’s 3 goalkeepers and our best available forward on the bench along with arguably one of our best centre backs. Seriously - what on earth is this team selection about?

Jack Wilshere's World Cup hopes look to be fading after his latest injury setback ruled him out of this friendly.

He did not travel on Thursday after sustaining a knee injury in training.

The Arsenal midfielder, 26, was hoping to win his first England cap since the last 16 exit to Iceland at Euro 2016.

But his latest problem highlighted the risk manager Gareth Southgate would be taking by including the injury-plagued Wilshere in his squad for Russia.

England manager Gareth Southgate has produced an intriguing line-up as it looks like Kyle Walker will be on the right side of a three-man defence with John Stones and Joe Gomez. Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose will be the wing-backs.

And plenty of pace and threat in a forward line of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling.

Everton's Jordan Pickford is also presented with a great chance to strengthen his claims to England's first-choice keeper at the World Cup in Russia.

No real sign of the Republic getting on terms in Antalya following home skipper Topal's goal on 52 minutes. In fact, Colin Doyle has had to make another decent save to stop a low drive from Hakan Calhanoglu. The Irish have made a double substitution with skipper Seamus Coleman and Sean Maguire withdrawn as Matt Doherty and Shane Long are introduced.

Ronald Koeman was in relaxed mood at his pre-match press conference as the man who was sacked as Everton manager in October prepares to take charge of the Netherlands for the first time.

Koeman has just had a long and very amicable chat with his England counterpart Gareth Southgate out on the pitch before making his way back down the tunnel.

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford's excellence with the ball at his feet and his distribution has helped put him in the driving seat for the England number one shirt at the World Cup, says boss Gareth Southgate.

"If Jordan Pickford does well here then he gives himself a huge boost and gives us food for thought," Southgate said ahead of tonight's friendly.

"All goalkeepers have different strengths. That is a particular strength of his and adds to the team in terms of how we want to play, but the pre-requisite is keeping the ball out of the net, so that has to be heavily weighted.

"We've spoken to our defenders about how we want to play but we've seen with Ederson at Manchester City that the goalkeeper is also important with that as well."
