Alan: Wigan have been brilliant in this first half. Just missing the breakthrough.

Barry: That Byrne lad for Wigan is pure class. Brilliant football brain.

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Southampton are swaying on the ropes.

Max Power's corner very nearly swirls in under the Southampton crossbar with Alex McCarthy just about pawing over the top....

Wigan are up to 10 corners.

Kelly: Stating the obvious, but Wigan need to take one of these chances.

Martin: Southampton look like a first division side. Awful.

  5. WATCH: Wigan go close through Cheyenee Dunkleypublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

Wigan having the better of the opportunities so far.

Here's Cheyenee Dunkley going close for Wigan after 15 minutes.

Give it. Give it. GIVE IT. GIVE IT!!!

    But he never does.

Michael Jacobs drives at the centre of the Southampton defence, but doesn't spot Gavin Massey in acres on his right shoulder.

One square pass and his team-mate would have been eye-to-eye with Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But Jacobs doesn't spot it. And his own shot is blocked.

That was fantastic play there from Wigan. It is really starting to open up now in this game!

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan lace together some lovely intricate build-up play all starting with Nathan Byrne's excellent threaded pass down the line for Gavin Massey.

The shot always seems to be just one pass away, but it never quite comes and chance is gone.

Manolo Gabbiadini has always impressed me. He has really good movement. It's alarming that you come to Southampton but don't really score goals.

Peter: New Manager. Same old Southampton.

Nick: This is basically a friendly for Southampton. Result irrelevant, Mark Hughes gets a chance to look at his squad in a match situation over 90mins.

    What a ball.

Ryan Bertrand controls with one touch and whips a classic corridor-of-uncertainty skidder into the Wigan box with his second.

Manolo Gabbiadini is only a stud's length away from connecting.

But the flag is up. He was a yard offside when the pass was played.

Better from Saints and a chorus goes up in praise of the Italian striker from the travelling fans.

This is meant as complement but Wigan must be horrible to play against. There is not a player out there that isn't fighting, battling and chasing players down.

Nath: Fair play to Wigan they have no fear.

Kyle: Rubbish so far from Southampton. Wigan are dominant hope they don’t regret these missed chances though as Brighton did yesterday.

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan centre-back Dan Burn is a big lad. A proper Jan Koller-style threat when he gets in the opposition penalty box.

He clocks in at six foot seven apparently.

Those long levers are put to illegal use however as he waits for a corner and shoves a Southampton marker away from him.

    Free-kick.

Another good spell for Wigan, they have had the best chances in this game. They have shown a bit more determination, a bit more fight.

Alex: Wigan are playing great. You would never guess that they were in League One!

Nokeeroe: I suspect Southampton will win their quarter final with Wigan this afternoon. Often a giant killer beats several top sides then falls to a seemingly easier team.

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan have their sixth corner of the match with less than 25 minutes on the board.

    They are bossing this.

Make that seven as Cedric Soares heads behind...

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Pat Nevin

It is hard to see who is ahead in this game. Southampton are starting to put a bit a pressure on, but those breaks from Wigan are very dangerous.

  19. 'Should have gone for power'published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

It is their [Wigan's] approach play again. It's great how it's looped across but he tries to sort of poke it and he should have gone for power.

  20. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Big chance.

Gavin Massey dollies a cross into the Southampton box which jack Stephens only half-clear with a weak header.

Gary Roberts is onto it, but the ball never sits quite right as he tries to control and he ends up stabbing tentatively over the top from 10 yards.

He didn't seem sure whether to go for power or precision and did neither in the end.
