  1. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

This game is opening up nicely.

Mario Lemina's shot fails to get the bite that he wants off his instep wafting wide, rather than whipping into the corner.

  2. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Sofiane Boufal lumps a shot high, high over the top of the Wigan goal from the edge of the area to ironic cheers from the home fans.

  3. 'Wigan mixing it up'published at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

One thing I have noticed about the Wigan side is everyone from the striker to the full-back wants to run with the ball and is comfortable on the ball.

Wigan have a lovely mixture of styles. They hit the ball long, but you also see the centre-backs and goalkeeper want to play out the back.

  4. CLOSE!published at 15 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan are knocking on the door.

Nathan Byrne's deflected shot drifts though the Southampton six-yard box and floats agonisingly past the stretching boot of Cheyenee Dunkley and inches the wrong side of the post for the hosts.

  5. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

There is a great match-up down the Wigan right where full-back Nathan Byrne is taking the fight to the equally pacey Ryan Bertrand.

This round is Byrne's as he zags in off the flanks and plays a good pass into the feet of Will Grigg in the box.

The striker's shot deflects behind off Jack Stephens.

  6. 'Keeper is brave'published at 13:43 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

It is a difficult ball in. The keeper is brave enough to come for it but he drops it. In the end he gets a little bit lucky but he deserves it for being so positive.

  7. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

The first glimmer of an opening for Southampton as Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton spills a swirling set-piece.

The loose ball hops up invitingly for Guido Carrillo, but the record signing from Monaco can only pattercake a shot back into the gloves of the goalkeeper.

Carrillo is still awaiting his first goal since arriving at Saints.

  8. 'Pitch can cause problems'published at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

You are not going to get a lot of time on the ball today. The pitch is hard, it is not the easiest conditions. It can be difficult to play smooth football and the ball bounces high. They were watering it before the game and that's dangerous - it could turn to ice!

  9. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Southampton have had 45% of possession so far according to the stats that I am looking at.

It doesn't feel like even that much so far.

They almost get a freebie though as Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton hacks a clearance away despite a backpass to him catching a huge bobble a fraction of a second before.

The surface is showing plenty of wear at this stage of the season.

  10. 'Worth a punt'published at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

It was worth a punt from there. He just couldn't get his body over the ball properly.

  11. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan right-back Nathan Byrne gets down the flank and sees his cross deflected behind for a corner.

    Enterprising stuff from the hosts.

And Gavin Massey swipes a hip-high half volley over the top from 20 yards when the ball breaks to him on the edge of the box.

  12. 'Good pace to the game'published at 13:34 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

There's good pace at the start of the game. But when it is this cold you tend to find players are a bit more willing to run, players want to be warmed up. No fear from either side so far.

  13. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan are popping the ball around neatly, but they are not afraid to lump long either.

Cheyenne Dunkley hits a searching ball down the line. Ryan Bertrand see it off.

  14. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Wigan defender Dan Burn puts down a marker with a tackle that rattles the fillings of a Southampton attacker.

That was as solid as a castle drawbridge.

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan 0-0 Southampton

Southampton emerge out of a huddle, but it is Wigan who get us under way as Michael Oliver blasts the whistle.

  16. Teams outpublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan v Southampton (13:30 GMT)

Wigan confirm some regional stereotypes by being first to peel off the tracksuit tops.

It looks absolutely Baltic out there still.

Mark Hughes pumps a fist over towards the travelling contingent as he makes his way to the dug-out.

There is a solid home-made sticky-back-plastic banner to welcome him.

  18. 'Even I can dream'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan v Southampton (13:30 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Wigan head coach Paul Cook speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It's a little bit more of the unknown. Mark [Hughes] has only been in the building for a few days so how much can he really do in that time?

"We are hoping to be as positive as we can. We always pay teams the upmost respect. Can we create chances, can we score goals, can we put Southampton under pressure? We want to make an impression on the game.

"It's always great to look back and think 'wow, we've knocked three Premier league teams out.'

"We want to be promoted that's for sure. To win the FA Cup we have to knock out Southampton and possibly Manchester United and Chelsea. But even I can dream!"

Joe: Wigan v United in Carling cup final. Big day for all Wiganers but my uncle had to sit in the car and listen to it on the radio as my cousin was too travel sick to go in! I almost envy him, we got hammered!

  20. 'We have to get the job done'published at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan v Southampton (13:30 GMT)

    Mark HughesImage source, Reuters

Southampton manager Mark Hughes speaking to BBC Sport: "We have got to be ready but I sense the group are. We are looking forward to it.

"It's a quarter-final and a great competition so we want to progress. I have put a team down that I think will win the game.

"There are a few players who aren't involved today who will clearly be involved in games going forward. We're at the business end of the season so we have to get the job done."
