One thing I have noticed about the Wigan side is everyone from the striker to the full-back wants to run with the ball and is comfortable on the ball.
Wigan have a lovely mixture of styles. They hit the ball long, but you also see the centre-backs and goalkeeper want to play out the back.
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
Wigan are knocking on the door.
Nathan Byrne's deflected shot drifts though the Southampton six-yard box and floats agonisingly past the stretching boot of Cheyenee Dunkley and inches the wrong side of the post for the hosts.
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
There is a great match-up down the Wigan right where full-back Nathan Byrne is taking the fight to the equally pacey Ryan Bertrand.
This round is Byrne's as he zags in off the flanks and plays a good pass into the feet of Will Grigg in the box.
The striker's shot deflects behind off Jack Stephens.

It is a difficult ball in. The keeper is brave enough to come for it but he drops it. In the end he gets a little bit lucky but he deserves it for being so positive.
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
The first glimmer of an opening for Southampton as Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton spills a swirling set-piece.
The loose ball hops up invitingly for Guido Carrillo, but the record signing from Monaco can only pattercake a shot back into the gloves of the goalkeeper.
Carrillo is still awaiting his first goal since arriving at Saints.

You are not going to get a lot of time on the ball today. The pitch is hard, it is not the easiest conditions. It can be difficult to play smooth football and the ball bounces high. They were watering it before the game and that's dangerous - it could turn to ice!
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
Southampton have had 45% of possession so far according to the stats that I am looking at.
It doesn't feel like even that much so far.
They almost get a freebie though as Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton hacks a clearance away despite a backpass to him catching a huge bobble a fraction of a second before.
The surface is showing plenty of wear at this stage of the season.

It was worth a punt from there. He just couldn't get his body over the ball properly.
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
Wigan right-back Nathan Byrne gets down the flank and sees his cross deflected behind for a corner.
Enterprising stuff from the hosts.
And Gavin Massey swipes a hip-high half volley over the top from 20 yards when the ball breaks to him on the edge of the box.

There's good pace at the start of the game. But when it is this cold you tend to find players are a bit more willing to run, players want to be warmed up. No fear from either side so far.
Wigan 0-0 Southampton
Wigan are popping the ball around neatly, but they are not afraid to lump long either.
Cheyenne Dunkley hits a searching ball down the line. Ryan Bertrand see it off.

Wigan defender Dan Burn puts down a marker with a tackle that rattles the fillings of a Southampton attacker.
That was as solid as a castle drawbridge.

Wigan head coach Paul Cook speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It's a little bit more of the unknown. Mark [Hughes] has only been in the building for a few days so how much can he really do in that time?
"We are hoping to be as positive as we can. We always pay teams the upmost respect. Can we create chances, can we score goals, can we put Southampton under pressure? We want to make an impression on the game.
"It's always great to look back and think 'wow, we've knocked three Premier league teams out.'
"We want to be promoted that's for sure. To win the FA Cup we have to knock out Southampton and possibly Manchester United and Chelsea. But even I can dream!"
