  1. 'Hughes will demand commitment'published at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan v Southampton

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

What Mark Hughes will demand is commitment - he does from all of his teams. He will want to see that on the pitch. Not the lackadaisical stuff they [Southampton fans] saw against Newcastle. That just won't be good enough!

  2. 'You've got to dream'published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2018

    Wigan v Southampton (13:30 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Wigan chairman David Sharpe on BBC Radio 5 live:

On their chances today: It has been a special run this year, not conceded a goal in the last three games. If we can get close to that again today we have a good chance. Another tough one, but why not?

On the weather: No snow which is odd, just very cold, hopefully we get a good game and the fans will be warmed up by that. Hopefully Southampton won’t be used to this cold.

Promotion or cup run?: Why not both? You’ve got to dream. We are in football for occasions like this. If we can get to the semi-finals and get promoted, what a season. It would be the highlight of my life as chairman.

    Kevin Kilbane
Former Republic of Ireland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you look at sides Wigan have put out in the FA Cup and how they performed against Bournemouth and West Ham – I know the performance against Manchester City was a bit different - they have played well. Having put three Premier League sides out, they won’t be daunted today.

    One against Bournemouth.

    One against Manchester City.

Wigan striker Will Grigg is the top-scorer in this year's FA Cup.

They should do a song about that...

Paul Cook seems to have made a flawless transition from being a player to a manager. You can feel the enthusiasm around the training ground.

He’s built this togetherness and he’s got this juggernaut going all in the right direction. Everyone’s pulling the same way, there are no superstars. He just makes everyone have such high standards.

"If Wigan Athletic, a League One club, get to the FA Cup semi-final, that day will be our cup final. I dream about that."

Wigan boss Paul Cook would certainly have taken the long route.

He played at Wembley for the Latics in 1988 as part of the Mercantile Credit Football Festival.

You know, the tournament to mark the centenary of the Football Association. It was part of a year of celebrations that began with a World XI, captained by Diego Maradona, losing 3-0 to a Football League XI that included Steve Ogrizovic on the bench.

Anyway, have a read of Neil Johnston's excellent feature to get a better idea of what drives the man who had led Wigan to the last eight and into promotion contention in League One.

Nick: Had to abort my attempt to get to Wigan for the game from Sheffield after trying both car and train. Gutted, but fingers crossed the tics get me a trip to Wembley in April to make up for it. 1-0, Michael Jacobs will do!

Samuel: 3 hours and counting from Sheffield for this match. Not even close to Manchester yet. Gonna win 8-0.

Wigan are aiming to drape a fourth Premier League scalp over the ramparts of the DW Stadium after successes against Bournemouth, West Ham and Manchester City in previous rounds.

Mark Hughes has told his side to be wary.

“They have a way of playing that would test anybody as its been proven. They’re good in their own league but have the ability to test teams at a higher level," he said.

“We have to go there with the intention of making sure they struggle with what they’re good at and what we’re good at, we execute.”

Trouble is Saints have not been very good at much so far this season.

Southampton vs Carlisle Johnstone Paint Trophy final at Wembley. Asked a Carlisle fan how long it would take to get home. Six hours apparently. Took us eight hours to get back to Portsmouth due to bus replacements, one broken down train and one train on fire. At least we won.

Former Southampton defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I’m looking forward to seeing Mark Hughes does, there is a lot of optimism from a Southampton perspective with his appointment. They are looking to him to have an impact and turn their league season around but they also have a great opportunity here to progress in the FA Cup.

Knowing Mark, having played with him and against him, hopefully he can bring the spark like his nickname to ignite the squad.

    Stoke City 1-2 Everton

Martin Keown on Match of the Day: "Charlie Adam did not need to make the tackle [that got him sent off]. Martin Atkinson had a great view and Adam let his team down, he lunged in and his studs were up.

"Neither goalkeeper [Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford] was really convincing and I think it was a good day for Joe Hart."

Shay Given on Match of the Day: "Gareth Southgate has a massive decision and probably the biggest decision he has in his team will be who starts in goal in the World Cup."
