    Danny Welbeck

Ah, sometimes you just don't get the breaks.

Arsenal pour forward despite Southampton's good little spell and Danny Welbeck smashes a shot on goal from outside the box that is deflected home via Maya Yoshida's stricken boot. Definitely on target though - so Welbeck's goal. His first in 17 Premier League games. Alex Iwobi with the pass into him, so his assist.

Did Saints give away too much space pressuring up the pitch?

    Arsenal 1-1 Southampton

Great pressure from Southampton again as Arsenal labour to clear their lines. James Ward-Prowse - making his 200th appearance today (still only 23) looks right and left on the ball. There's a shimmer of threat down the left wing through Dusan Tadic but Hector Bellerin stands firm.

Looking very comfortable in possession themselves now, Southampton.

Robert Smith: It seems very unfair on other teams in danger of relegation that Arsenal have put out such a weakened side today. Such high stakes for the teams down there

Johnny Magrinho: Just saw the table - if Arsenal lose today they’ll only be three points ahead of Burnley. I have no idea how Wenger would have the nerve to stay on another year as manager, even if they won the Europa League (which I don’t think they will)...

It will be Granit Xhaka instead and he smashes it over the bar wildly. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won't let him off so easily next time, just a little glance for now.

Arsenal corner - the second in a strong spell of pressure. It goes too long but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spins it back in and Calum Chambers tries an overhead kick which bounces into a marker and to safety.

Down the other end - Shane Long chases a Dusan Tadic flick after Chambers gave the ball away, shooting just wide. But the flag was up.

That was a fantastic goal - typical Arsenal. And it's actually very similar to Paul Pogba's first goal yesterday, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has played the ball in, anticipated where it's going to end up, carried on his run, and finished it nicely.

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal respond! Danny Welbeck pops up on the edge with a clever little flick into Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who barely gets anything on a shade of a finish beyond Alex McCarthy to level. The home side's first attempt on target.

So what was all the fuss about then eh?

This would be a very big win for Southampton, and they're going the right way about it so far. Arsenal have shown their hand, and where their priorities lie, with their line-up, so Southampton won't get many better chances than this to win at the Emirates.

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

It's as patient as it is quiet in the stands. The way Southampton have set up now, it has to be. Arsenal having all of the ball before 11 players that were earlier set up to stop them, now protecting a lead.

Reiss Nelson tries to spin one through but it bounces off Dusan Tadic's legs.

Eddie: Stupid, brain-dead mistake from a supposed World Cup winner. Game after game after game - ad infinitum, ad nauseum. And they'll be wondering why fans choose to stay away at the Emirates.

Kai: So far, the new and rejuvenated Arsenal look a bit like the old and predictable Arsenal.

Harry McCrea: What does Iwobi offer Arsenal as an attacking midfielder? He doesn't score, assist, make dangerous runs, or play incisive passes...

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

Dusan Tadic puffs his chest out as he's the only Southampton man who chases down a zippy through ball over the top that with a bit more commitment might have stretched Arsenal at the back once more. Shane Long might only have two goals in his past 40 games, but his pace is a real danger.

Max: My word, I've seen better defending in League 2. Arsenal are a shambles. I will have to watch the rest of the game from behind the sofa.

Jonny Mango: Mustafi has been a poor signing considering how much his transfer cost.

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Arsenal are really struggling to make anything happen right now. It's great what Southampton are doing - they've got a game plan and they're sticking to it. You can see the Arsenal players are getting frustrated already, they're getting sloppy and they've given the ball away too easily.

Better. Hector Bellerin is found on the right wing, a flowing move that went somewhere this time. The Spaniard zooms in a cross on towards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but there's a big Southampton head in between them.

Reiss Nelson looks to break the offside trap with a low through ball but Aubameyang is caught. The flag goes up. Mark Hughes is prowling the touchline, vigilant.

David Ljunggren: That is staggeringly bad defending. How is that even possible at the top level of football?

David Thomas: Truly horrendous defending! People question why there are so many empty seats, this is why. Gooners are fed up of this

Frustration, impatience, the knowledge that they have seen this so many times before. There's groans and just general pleading with their team from the Arsenal home fans as we revert back to type - Southampton solid in front of the Gunners' passing.
