Clifturn: How is Mustafi a Premier League defender? He's weak, he doesn't see danger and he dives in too readily.

  2. 'Really poor defending'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

What a run by Shane Long! Straight across the front post, Petr Cech is hesitant and Shkodran Mustafi is caught ball watching. Really poor defending from Arsenal there. That was a great striker's run and finish, but one of Mustafi or Cech should have taken control of that situation.

    Shane Long

Oh it is just so bad from Arsenal at the back.

Cedric Soares is by the corner flag going nowhere, but still he gets a cross into the box past Sead Kolasinac. Still, Petr Cech should clear the danger. Or Shkodran Mustafi. Or maybe they instead both leave the ball to bounce into Shane Long's patient path - the striker pouncing to prod his team ahead into a deserved lead. Very, very bad from Arsene Wenger's defence.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Rob Nothman
BBC Radio 5 live at Emirates Stadium

I was at the Emirates last week for the game against Stoke. There were thousands of empty seats then - there are more today. Arsenal with plenty of possession but struggling to penetrate at the moment - Southampton lively on the break.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Reiss Nelson does well to win the ball back in his own half. Alex Iwobi is out wide and his low ball Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is put out for a corner. More bite from the home side. But no end product.

Mark Taylor: The Arsenal defence so far resembles St Andrews. Holes all over the place.

Mark Davies: What an awful defence. No wonder Arsenal are having a poor season. Zero composure.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Southampton are looking really sharp here. Leaving Arsenal no space when the home side inevitably control possession, and already they've had three very decent openings on the counter. Impressive start.

  8. 'Saints looking to counter'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Southampton's game plan looks to be to soak up the pressure and hit Arsenal on the counter-attack, and all it took was one long ball upfield then to set Shane Long clear, he just didn't put enough on his ball to Dusan Tadic.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Space again for Shane Long on the counter after an Arsenal move breaks down. Dusan Tadic is running up to meet him - Shkodran Mustafi stretches to clear Long's cut-back and doesn't reach it, but Tadic has to jump over his challenge and can't get to the loose ball quicker than a covering Arsenal shirt.

More danger for the Gunners early on.

  10. 'Unlucky Ward-Prowse'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

That's a great passage of play from Southampton - they really used the ball well then, deep in Arsenal's half to make a couple of opportunities. James Ward-Prowse will count himself unlucky there, having beaten Petr Cech.

Southampton's midfielders are pressing and harrying, too, which is good because they're trying to stop Arsenal playing through midfield.

  11. CLOSE!published at 8 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Brilliant move from Southampton. Jack Stephens does really nicely at the back, finds Shane Long with a long ball in behind. There's a cut back to James Ward-Prowse, who beats the onrushing Petr Cech but not Calum Chambers on the line!

Southampton come again - Dusan Tadic drives into the box once more and his dangerous cross is prodded behind.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Southampton seem to be comfortable letting Arsenal having possession of the ball, they look resolute and organised. But they need to be ready to break when they do get the ball, otherwise they'll just be forced back deeper and deeper.

At the moment there aren't any runs in behind from the Arsenal forwards, they don't look like penetrating just yet.

Shane Long on his own up top for the visitors. Ten Southampton teal shirts behind the ball.

They get a first chance to build something of their own from the back and Wesley Hoedt booms the ball out of play.

  14. 'Saints in freefall'published at 14:20 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Arlo White
BBC radio 5 live commentator at Emirates Stadium

This is a huge day for Southampton - they have just one win in 18 and are in total freefall.

  15. 'Arsenal start brightly'published at 14:20 British Summer Time 8 April 2018

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Arsenal have started very brightly, playing the majority of their football in Southampton's half, and they're looking slick, just waiting for the right moment to play that killer pass.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Southampton, sitting right back from the very start then, shuffle across the park as Arsenal play it left, right, and back again with zip but no real penetration, before Oriol Romeu jumps in to intervene, winning a free-kick from Danny Welbeck.

James Lockwood: Please keep the momentum going Arsenal and don't ruin my Sunday! Hoping Reiss Nelson can have a good game!

Mart: I fancy Southampton today, they need it more. They can do a Newcastle and win three in a row.

A fair few empty seats on show again in north London. First touches for Reiss Nelson and the 18-year-old is cleaned out by Dusan Tadic after selling him a dummy.
