Chris Rea's 'I don't know what it is but I love it' has just been blasted out of the speakers at Anfield. It's what the Liverpool players sang to the Roma team in the tunnel before the 1984 European Cup final at Stadio Olimpico - will it have the same effect tonight?

Jez: I think Liverpool's plucky run will end tonight. Roma will shut up shop and will punish Liverpool's poor midfield and defence. 2 nil Roma.

Sergio: There is a slight concern for Liverpool with that bench. There is no real plan b option if things go wrong.

These European nights, Liverpool are famous for that, and this is why you play for Liverpool. This is why you play for a club like this, because you know you are going to gets nights like this, playing in front of the fans. It means a lot to you as a player because it means a lot to them. You go out there and you have got to run through brick walls for them.

    Liverpool v Roma (19:45 BST)

    Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "We cannot get a result without a good game. That's it. It's a strong side and they are playing the same system they played against Barcelona so that's a big honour!

"Really exciting. Really open game with two strong sides. It's a nice mix of experience, youth, skills, threat, everything. It's how semi-finals should be.

"You never go into the game thinking about conceding goals. We want to score but never at the cost of a leaky defence.

"We know exactly how we have to play but again, there's a ball, eleven players on the other side and you need to have answers. We have to learn from the game.

"We don't think about the result at the moment, we think about the performance."

The journalist then jokingly asks him about a wet pitch and Klopp replied, "Ah yes, I was not in such a good mood that day..." and walks off laughing.

  10. 'How can team that beat Barcelona be weak?'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Liverpool v Roma (19:45 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

On the Anfield atmosphere: "It is another wonderful opportunity for us, and my first thought after we won the second leg against City was great, another European night at Anfield, I have been looking forward to it for two or three weeks."

On Roma as a good draw: "You can't help people saying it, but I think normally the final people expect is Real Madrid vs Bayern, they are in the semi finals so one of the two outsides if you want Liverpool and Roma are in the other. One will go through. If it helped to say Roma are weak I would but it doesn't, it is not the truth, they have the full squad available and can make six or seven changes and be strong. They beat Barcelona. How can that be a weak team?"

Volume levels just starting to increase inside Anfield as the Liverpool and Roma players warm up on a surface that will be slick after a day of constant heavy rain on Merseyside.

It will be a testing night for goalkeepers Loris Karius and Roma's outstanding Brazilian Alisson.

Alisson has been heavily linked with Liverpool but Karius has the faith of manager Jurgen Klopp and is now his established first-choice.

Liverpool's fans will hope their attacking trio of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane will test Alisson's credentials to the full.

I think so. At the start of the season Salah was missing chances, but now he scores with his right foot, left foot, chipped in with a few headers. Everything is passed, caressed into the net. He looks like scoring goals is effortless at the minute.

It's stopped raining at Anfield but it is still a decidedly chilly evening on Merseyside. The teams are out and warming up and both sets of fans are already in fine voice - the Roma fans have not shut up actually, including one chant to the tune of Billy Ray Cyrus's Achy Breaky Heart. Liverpool fans can look forward to hearing that echo around Stadio Olimpico in a week's time.

Alan Kennedy, who won the Champions League with Liverpool against Roma in 1984, speaking to BT Sport: "How I ever ended up in the penalty shoot-out I will never know! Obviously we didn't know what Bruce Grobbelaar was doing at the time.

"Everything was spontaneous! We scored the first goal which was the important one. Our backs were against the wall but we survived and took it to the shoot-out.

"Bruce was unbelievably uncharacteristic for a goalkeeper. He was just different. We were stood on the halfway line and couldn't see what he was doing!

"When you look back on it, you think what a great idea! We then had Jerzy Dudek who did the exact same thing in the Champions League final (2005)."

Tom: I think Roma will be too strong for Liverpool tonight, who rely on the front 3. Roma are balanced across the field and are defensively strong, having conceded 10 less goals than Liverpool in their respective leagues. Roma to win 2-1

  20. 'Ignore Firmino & Mane at your peril'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

Sadio Mane and Roberto FirminoImage source, Reuters

Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie on BBC Radio 5 Live:

It might be the case that Liverpool are reliant on Mohamed Salah, but when you look at the stats and figures, Sadio Mane has chipped in with 17 odd goals this season, Roberto Firmino is up to about 25. So it is not just a one-man side.

Salah has done exceptionally well, he’s been absolutely fantastic. 41 goals for the season is absolutely fantastic so he is obviously the threat and the danger for Roma but if you take your eye off the other two especially, Sadio Mane who has been back on form you do so at your own peril.
