  2. 'Not Klopp's style to be too prudent'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Liverpool v Roma (19:45 BST)

    Gerard Houllier
Former PSG and Liverpool manager on BBC Radio 5 live

On Liverpool's approach: It's not the style or the philosophy of Jurgen Klopp to be too caring and too prudent.

Liverpool will play their usual style which is based mainly on pressing the opposition in the final third and counter-attacking quickly.

If you look at the record of Italian teams away from home it is not that impressive. Liverpool have scored more goals and conceded fewer goals than any other team in the competition.

    Prediction? 3-1 for Liverpool!

Roma's tactics in their stunning comeback against Barcelona back up Eusebio di Francesco words as their average position in that game shows how high they pressed.

They were in nothing to lose territory at that point, however.

Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco says his side will not sit back against Liverpool and insisted there is more to focus on than just the threat of Mohamed Salah.

"They have to do well to force us deep," said Di Francesco. "The decisive thing will be for us to stay compact.

"Liverpool are not just Salah. The front three combine really well together and that's not an insignificant factor. We haven't prepared this game with one player in mind."

Roma play three at the back, which suggests that I think they will pack the midfield. I think they will see that as being the key. They know Salah because he played for them, they know what a good player he is and I think his form has surprised a lot of his ex-teammates at Roma. They knew he was a good player, they didn’t realise he was a great player.

I think what they will be more inclined to do is stop the balls going through to him, stop the supply line. You can be the best player in the world but you are no good without the ball.

A very different - and very wet - welcome for the Roma team coach tonight. Half of Arkles Lane and a long stretch of Anfield Road is closed to fans.

There are still a lot of Reds supporters making a lot of noise outside The Arkles pub where the Manchester City coach got stuck in a bottleneck (and a hailstorm of bottles) when they came here for the quarter-finals but there appears to be much heavier police police and steward presence as well as the road closures.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects Mohamed Salah will not get "friendly" treatment from his former Roma team-mates tonight.

Salah scored 34 goals in 83 appearances for the Italian club before joining Liverpool last summer in a £34m deal and this will be the first time he has faced his former colleagues.

"Mo will know pretty soon they are not his team-mates any more," said Klopp. "Italian defenders are famous for not having friendly games - but he can strike back in football terms."

  13. Salah eyeing Rush recordpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

Continuing the theme of similarities between this Liverpool season and the European Cup-winning one 34 years ago, Ian Rush scored 47 goals in the 1983-84 campaign, a haul that still stands as a record to this day.

Salah has 41 goals this season and five games remaining to score the seven goals he needs to take the record from Rush.

"I will be very happy if I break it. I want to keep scoring, I want to be number one for the record," Salah said last week, external.

"It's always good when you see your name with legends of a club like Liverpool, it's a different feeling and I'm very happy about that."

We saw a replica Champions League trophy in a pie shop a little earlier but here's the real deal.

I have to admire this chap's confidence to carry it like this. In the rain. While also trying to hold an umbrella.

I really wouldn't want to be the person who drops it and puts a mighty dent in it.

I think the Roma players delayed kick off deliberately, and we decided to sing a song. Chris Rea is one of my favourite artists, I was a poor singer but we sang ‘I don’t know what it is but I love it’, we knew the words.

Can you imagine walking down the tunnel, and Bruce Grobbelaar is imitating a guitar and pulling the strings. That made us feel nice and relaxed about going out and I think the Roma players were a bit shocked by it.

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to show Roma "respect" when they arrive at Anfield tonight.

Cans, bottles and flares were thrown at Manchester City's bus as it arrived at the ground before the first leg of their quarter-final earlier this month.

"This is an outstanding club known for its fantastic atmosphere," said Klopp on the eve of the semi-final first leg. "We don't need to throw things."

Those of you of a certain age may not be aware of Bruce Grobbelaar's 'spaghetti legs'.

Facing Italian legends Bruno Conti and Francesco Graziani in that 1984 final, Liverpool's flamboyant goalkeeper began swaying one way then another on the goal line, letting his legs go wobbly. Both players missed their penalties.

"It came down to [then Liverpool boss] Joe Fagan," Grobbelaar explained back in 2014., external "He put his arm around me before the penalties were actually taken and he said: 'Listen, we are not going to blame you for trying to stop the ball from going into the net. If they can't hit the target, it's their fault!' As I walked away, he said: 'But Bruce, try to put them off!'

"I looked at the players who were taking the AS Roma penalties and I did those silly things with my legs against two international players in Conti and Graziani. I wasn't doing that to any minnows, I wanted to put off the best, and unfortunately they came up short and they failed - which was great for us."
