David Alaba returns for Bayern Munich from a thigh injury. But the first leg took its toll and Javi Martinez, Arjen Robben and Jerome Boateng, all injured in that match, miss out - although Martinez is fit enough to be on the bench.

Thiago is among the other players to come into the starting line-up.

Full team news to follow. Still waiting for Real's team to be named.

Three of the four Champions League semi-finalists are only third in their domestic leagues (and all at least 15 points off top) - Real Madrid, Liverpool and Roma.

The other team, Bayern Munich, are the champions of Europe's third or fourth best league (depending how you view the Bundesliga and Serie A).

Does anyone think these are the four best teams in Europe? Does it matter? Would you prefer to win your domestic league or the Champions League?

Real Madrid come into this tie 2-1 ahead following the first leg at the Allianz Arena.

The holders, attempting to win the competition for the third successive season, struggled defensively but were clinical in attack - and Marcelo and Marco Asensio scored either side of half-time.

Joshua Kimmich had put Bayern in front when he slotted past Keylor Navas at the near post.

The German champions missed a host of chances in an error-strewn encounter, while Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for handball as his run of scoring in every game of this year's competition ended.

"Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win," Gary Lineker once said.

Replace Germans with Real Madrid and you have the story of the Champions League.

After Zidane took over in January 2016, they won the Champions League - and then became the first team to successfully defend it. They are now 180 minutes from making that three in a row.
