  1. Can Ronaldo start a new scoring run?published at 19:30 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Obsessive football statistician nerds (like me) will be disappointed to see Cristiano Ronaldo's run of scoring in consecutive games come to an end last week.

He had scored in his previous 12 Real games before failing to net at the Allianz Arena (although he did have a goal disallowed) - that was the first Champions League game he had failed to score in since last year's semi-finals.

However his run of 22 goals in 13 Real games still isn't looking too bad. Or 26 in 16 if you prefer.

He is the top scorer in this season's Champions League with 15. This will be his sixth Champions League golden boot in a row (including one shared) unless Roberto Firmino or Mohamed Salah can score a couple of hat-tricks (they're on 10 each).

Both of these managers have won the Champions League twice as a manager - although one has taken a significantly shorter amount of time.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has won back-to-back trophies in his two and a bit years in charge.

Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes - whose managerial career started in the 1970s - won in 1998 with today's opponents Real and in 2013 with the Munich side.

This could be his final Champions League game as he's being replaced by Niko Kovac this summer. But we all thought that when he retired after being replaced by Pep Guardiola directly after the 2013 success...

It was extraordinary. In the second half of the first leg, Real Madrid almost played with 10 men. Cristiano Ronaldo was so passive. But he epitomises Real Madrid.

He doesn't need to do a lot, they don't need to do a lot, and they still find a way to win. You feel Bayern have blown it.

A colleague of mine said for Bayern to beat Real, everything needs to be perfect. For Real to beat Bayern, they just need to have an average game. That 10 or 20% difference in class was telling and will probably be telling again.

Bayern are the underdogs. Real feel like 'we'll just win'. They're the better version of Bayern - they are in Europe what Bayern are in the Bundesliga. They have a sense of infallibility and an aura.

  5. 'We want a fair and just referee'published at 19:23 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST, 2-1 first leg)

Mind games, get your mind games here.

Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes has called for referee Cuneyt Cakir to be "fair and just" tonight in the Bernabeu cauldron.

Last season when these sides met Bayern were angry with Arturo Vidal's red card and two possibly offside Real goals.

"We had him against Paris St-Germain earlier this season and he did well.

"What I expect for him is to be objective, fair and just. I'm expecting a fair form of refereeing and I expect his decisions not to interfere with the outcome of the game."

  6. 'Changing nothing would be a mistake'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST, 2-1 first leg)

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes: "We know things are going to be difficult, Madrid are used to very important games but so are we.

"We'll be a very tough opponent; we'll fight and little details will be fundamental.

"We need to minimise our mistakes and we want to change a few things from the first leg.

"Changing nothing would be an error. I saw positive things but there are things to be fixed. I'll be trying to rectify mistakes, we'll try to attack. We conceded goals because of some mistakes - it had nothing to do with the organisation or style of play."

Not sure about the other teams but Bayern would definitely prefer to win the Champions League. Dominating the Bundesliga isn't that much of an achievement.

Robert Lewandowski has scored 39 goals in all competitions this season, but none in his previous four Champions League games

He is low on confidence at the moment. His lack of presence and physical mobility is a concern for Bayern. He hasn’t been quite right for a number of weeks. When your main striker doesn’t perform, you’re in trouble.

I don’t think Real Madrid are that keen on him so long as Cristiano Ronaldo is the centre-forward. I don’t think Lewandowski is that keen on being the new Karim Benzema either, doing the work for Ronaldo to score.

He’s under pressure to put on a big performance in this game.

I thought Bayern edged it last week even though they got beaten.

They got a lot of joy from Franck Ribery down the right who was on fire. Lucas Vazquez is not a right-back, who is going to help the full-back? If Real Madrid play in a diamond then David Alaba can join in too.

This game is not finished. Bayern can easily turn it around.

  13. Team newspublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST)

Karim Benzema, a substitute from the first leg, starts for Real Madrid, but Gareth Bale is again on the bench.

Mateo Kovacic and Marco Asensio also start, with Dani Carvajal and Isco injured, while Casemiro is only among the substitutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo, rested for Real's 2-1 La Liga win over Leganes on Saturday, is included, as you would expect him to be.

Real Madrid: Navas, Lucas, Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Asensio, Kovacic, Modric, Kroos, Benzema, Ronaldo. Subs: Casilla, Nacho, Bale, Casemiro, Hernandez, Borja Mayoral, Ceballos.

There are four changes to the Bayern Munich side from the first leg.

Arjen Robben, who went off with a leg injury in that match in Germany, was not included in Bayern's squad, while Jerome Boateng could miss the World Cup because of a thigh injury picked up last week.

Rafinha and Javi Martinez also drop to the bench with Niklas Sule, Corentin Tolisso, Thiago Alcantara and David Alaba all coming into the team.

Bayern Munich: Ulreich, Kimmich, Hummels, Sule, Alaba, Tolisso, Thiago, Muller, Rodriguez, Ribery, Lewandowski. Subs: Starke, Wagner, Javi Martinez, Rafinha, Lukas, Rudy, Dorsch.

  14. My future does not depend on this - Zidanepublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST, 2-1 first leg)

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane does not think his future depends on winning the Champions League this season.

"It's independent of that," he said.

He has won it in both of his two campaigns so far - but Real sit 15 points below Barcelona, who have already won the La Liga title.

"Today I'm the coach and I want to continue at this club. But it's not important. What matters to everyone is thinking about this game and that's it.

"The key for us it to go out to win the game. No need to take chances, to play on the back foot, nor to do anything strange. We've got to go out and get an early goal."

  15. Vazquez at right-backpublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST, 2-1 first leg)

One of the major talking points was who would play at right-back for Real Madrid today. Zinedine Zidane was coy when asked yesterday. But it looks like it's going to be winger Lucas Vazquez, who dropped back there in the first leg.

A busy night for him against Franck Ribery.

The other options were centre-back Nacho, who is on the bench, and captain Sergio Ramos - who plays in the centre.

You'd think a team as rich as Real Madrid could afford a couple more right-backs.

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (19:45 BST, 2-1 first leg)

Real Madrid are making their eighth Champions League semi-final appearance in a row, winning the tournament three times in the past four years.

In two and a half years under Zinedine Zidane, their only four European defeats have been in first or second legs (when they won the tie overall) or in the group stage.

They have won 12 European Cups to Bayern's five.

The German side have been in six of the last seven semi-finals, only failing when Real beat them in the quarters last season.

They last won it in 2013, Jupp Heynckes' previous season in charge before this campaign.
