  2. Salah was 100% fitpublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Uruguay v Saudi Arabia (16:00 BST)

Egypt coach Hector Cuper on Mohamed Salah's injury: "When we talk about 100%, we have to look at the medical side. I was told by the medical team he was fit.

"He could not prepare with us in the training sessions all the time, he had to train alone.

"I believe he was in good shape and optimal condition. If he did not get injured in the Champions League final then he would have had three weeks' extra training with us as a group.

"Salah is crucial, a vital player for the squad. He is a point of reference. He suffered an injury and we have been worried. We knew if he recovered in time it would be a good thing. The only thing I can be sad for is I would have liked to have seen him present at the training ground with the team."

The player rater has closed so we can see who you selected as the man of the match.

Russian goalscorer Artem Dzyuba was the clear winner on 7.17. Mohamed Salah was the fourth highest rated player on either team - I suspect some Liverpool fans were having a go.

There have already been 10 penalties awarded in 17 games at this World Cup - the same number that there were in the entire group stages of the 2014 tournament.

In fact, there were only 13 in the whole of the 2014 event.

Diegwu Nwankwor: Bad night for the Pharoahs. I think they were so naive in their defending, in fact that has been the story of all African teams since the World Cup started. Quite sad.

Since the end of the USSR, Russia are unbeaten against African teams at the World Cup (W3, D1) - including a 6-1 win over Cameroon in 1994 in which Oleg Salenko scored five.

Head coach Stanislav Cherchesov played in goal for Russia in that game.

  7. Postpublished at 21:19 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

That game only had four shots on target - and four goals. Although one of the goals was an own goal.

Russia keeper Igor Akinfeev has not saved a shot yet at the World Cup...

I'll tell you what, with Egypt pretty much out I'll be furious if they don't play 45-year-old keeper Essam El Hadary in their final game against Saudi Arabia on Monday.

He'll become the oldest player in World Cup history.

The Saudis were so bad against Russia, that El Hadary could probably play up front and beat the oldest goalscorer record too.

There have now been five own goals at the 2018 World Cup – the only tournament to see more in the competition was in 1998 (6).

COME ON GUYS - LET'S BREAK THAT RECORD.

Josh Palmer: Russia really have shocked the world, gone from ‘doomed to fail’ to a team that has well and truly got into the knockout phases.

Egypt had to risk Mohamed Salah today, didn't they? Better to take the gamble (and he did score to be fair) than play a much inferior player?

  15. 'Russia worked their good fortune'published at 21:04 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

    Russia 3-1 Egypt

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

They were the butt of jokes, they seemed so hopeless and hapless. They were getting battered in friendlies, they looked average.

They got a fortunate draw and boy they have ridden their luck. Saudi Arabia are one of the worst teams in the tournament, Egypt with an injured Salah, who could barely run, was like having 10 men.

Everything was working in their favour but you have to make use of that.

    Russia 3-1 Egypt

    Alan Shearer

Once they got that first goal, Egypt crumbled. They couldn't cope with the pressure.

You could here the atmosphere in the stadium and the intensity of the Russian players increased with it.
