  5. 'Champions League final changed everything'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

    Russia 3-0 Egypt

    John Bennett
    BBC World Service in Russia

You have to feel for Egypt. The scenes when they qualified for the World Cup were incredible. It was a moment they’d waited for for 27 years.

Now it’s over before it began.

It’s not over simplistic to say that the Champions League final changed everything. Mohamed Salah turns this team from ordinary to capable of magic moments. It was never going to be the same without him fully fit. He will be heartbroken.

Artem Dzyuba has held the ball up well, been a danger and gets his goal. He was instrumental in the first goal too.

You need to take a bus to get around him. Like an old-fashioned British centre forward the way he holds up the ball.

Incredible noise inside the stadium. Six days ago these fans were almost convinced this team would let them down. Now after just two games of their home World Cup they have a team they can believe in.

And a new hero too - Denis Cheryshev. Russia are heading to the last 16 for the first time since 1986. With this momentum you could see the run continuing. Russia’s players have won back the public.

    Russia 3-0 Egypt

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One

A very accomplished finish from the big man. Artem Dzyuba has deserved that with his work tonight.

It's poor defending but still, a calm finish. They couldn't get five again, could they?

  18. Postpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Russia will not technically be through, nor Egypt out tonight. But both those things will happen if Saudi Arabia do not beat Uruguay tomorrow.
