    France 2-1 Australia

Antoine Griezmann was taken off in this game which felt a little odd. The Atletico Madrid striker of course opened the scoring from the spot and France are now unbeaten in the 18 games that he has scored in (W16 D2 L0).

He's also been directly involved in nine of France's last 13 goals in major tournaments, with seven goals and two assists.

  4. 'An almighty effort'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    France 2-1 Australia

    Australia captain Mile Jedinak:

We're disappointed, we didn't have the luck today. The second goal was fortunate for them, just over the line. We've got to take the positives, pick ourselves up and go again.

We knew we had to be right at it from the first whistle, maintaining discipline and focus. We got ourselves back into the game, we felt good. Then they got the goal, we gave it a go but it was not enough.

I told my teammates that if we maintain that structure and concentration we showed today, let's see where it gets us. I can't fault them, almighty effort today,.

  7. Youthful Francepublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    France 2-1 Australia

Looking at the stats, it's worth remembering this France starting line-up was their youngest in a World Cup match since 1930 when they played Chile. Their average age was just 24 years and 196 days.

They edged over the line but some may argue they'll be better for getting a game of that magnitude under their belts given their tender age.

    Better next time out?

  8. 'Pogba was influential'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    France 2-1 Australia

    Didier Drogba
Phoenix Rising and former Ivory Coast striker

I think Pogba was influential, playing the ball in for Mbappe, Griezmann, and Dembele. He was alternating his pases, short and long.

The Introduction of Giroud helped to create the link between number nine and 10.

Was Pogba good today? I thought it was a safe performance, he played everything simple.

    France 2-1 Australia

    Phil Neville

I still think I'm right and it's not a penalty. It has to be clear and obvious. We have three different opinions in the studio so it's not clear.

    France 2-1 Australia

France will not care of course but that opening goal was so key in the game. Granted Australia cancelled it out but the pattern of France generally being frustrated was broken.

Do you think it was a penalty. It feels like the challenge fell into the grey area many predicted VAR would always struggle to deal with.

Phil Neville has his say next...

  12. 'Deschamps will ring changes'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    France 2-1 Australia

    Alex Scott
Arsenal Ladies & former England international on BBC One

Coming into the game Didier Deschamps was under pressure to change formation to get the front three of Mbappe, Griezmann and Dembele in. It didn't click.

Next game, he might revert to 4-4-2 with Giroud and Griezmann up front.

    France 2-1 Australia

I expected a battle, which is why I predicted a 1-0 win for France, they have problems starting in tournament and Australia did well.

    France 2-1 Australia

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Points in the bag, job done but they made hard work of it because the Australians were organised and worked very hard.

That little bit of quality from the French pipped them at the line.

I have seen the French penalty a few times, I think the contact has come from Griezmann, not the defender, with Griezmann kicking the defender. It is a very minimal contact and whether it is enough is difficult to see.

  17. Postpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    France 2-1 Australia

That was a bizarre 90 minutes. Here's my nutshell analysis.

France start fast, Australia tame them nicely.

VAR assists France get with a penalty which is a very, very tight call.

Australia get their own penalty minutes later. The game is now a bit mad.

The zip leaves the encounter and Paul Pogba creates an own goal to win it.

France over the line without being eye-catching.

A long throw just evades Mile Jedinak. The French partially clear and Australia can't quite get control of the ball as it pings around on the edge of the box.
