GOAL - Antoine Griezmannpublished at 57 mins

    France 1-0 Australia

Well, well, well, the simplicity of Griezmann's whipped left-foot finish across his body does not reflect the complexity of the moment.

There was only a fraction in it. Josh Ridson, chasing from behind Griezmann slid in desperately right on the edge of the box. The referee said no but he was told to go and look at the monitor.

Hey presto, France lead. That was a tight, tight call.

VAR at the World Cup ladies and gents!

That's some history and that's some drama. Antoine Griezmann felled by Josh Risdon.

Identifying the foul probably took around a minute.

    Big moment.

Antoine Griezmann is slid in behind the defence and goes down. We have a no penalty shout but the Video Assistant Referee is looking at it.

  6. Postpublished at 53 mins

    France 0-0 Australia

The French substitutes are warming up as Mat Ryan takes about two weeks to take a goal kick.

Eventually Mathew Leckie gets down the right and a ball into the mixer almost falls for Andrew Nabbout. It squirms away from him and France can clear. That's one of those which could have landed anywhere.

Lucas Henrnandez is down after taking a whack in the mouth but he will solider on. France looks to build patiently in the Australia half. Raphael Varane plays a pass but Benjamin Pavard is hassled admirably. It's all work ethic and organisation from the Socceroos. They are not giving up an inch.

No changes but notable how France press Mark Miligan at the back, prompting them to win back the ball high up. That was lacking in the first half.

Milligan heads a first-time Lucas Hernandez cross away.

    France 0-0 Australia

If you're just joining us, we've seen France fly out of the traps but fade like a greyhound with a belly full of rubble. They've had five shots - four in the first eight minutes - but Australia have now had four.

You can see from the graphic that possession is now fairly even, though more of the game is being played in Australia's final third.
