World Cup 2018: Harry Kane seals his hat-trick to put England 6-0 up

England captain Harry Kane: "The third one is probably one of the luckiest goals of my career but as a striker you go through spells when you’re scoring, sometimes they don’t fall for you. So far it’s been going my way, so hopefully that continues."

Harry Kane has been caught on the hop in his post-match news conference.

A Brazilian TV crew tells the England striker they ask all hat-trick scorers to pick a song to play out.

"I wasn't prepared for that... One Kiss by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa."

Darren Ling: how very pleasant to have a referee who at last in this World Cup gives penalties for foul play for constant holding at set pieces, refreshing and a great game by England

Hugo Thoms: so England just beat the opposition 6-1. Ok Panama aren't great but I really wish the fans would stop talking this performance down. England are not going to win the world cup but 2 wins out of 2 and scoring 8 goals isn't bad...Harry Kane top scorer with 5 goals.

World Cup 2018: Panama celebrate pulling a goal back against England

Panama coach Hernan Gomez: "The result itself, I think the difference of goals could have been more. We could have conceded more goals. We tried to play against England. We tried to avoid a bigger catastrophe and kept the ball in the second half.

"England are so practical. It’s a beautiful team. There were moments when England couldn’t really decipher how we were playing and create those spaces.

"I spoke to a colleague at half-time and said ‘I’m starting to feel scared’. We can't think about eqaulising, we have to think about stopping England scoring more goals.

"We wanted 0-0 in the first half but we were feeling rather frightened. Given that Panama is like a small young child in football, other teams don’t really decipher our style of play - there were three or four opportunities we didn’t take properly."

I've sat through the Ecuadors, Paraguays, Trinidads, Russias, Slovenias, and Algerias of this world and seen England struggle to break them down and score any goals let alone 6. Put this result and score into perspective!

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Sport: "I didn't particularly like the performance! I didn't like the start and I didn't like the goal at the end but I guess the bits in the middle were pretty good. I am being hyper-critical, though. I just thought we were a little anxious at the start. We played some really good stuff for 35-40 minutes but then of course the second half was more difficult.

"At 5-0 we talked about the importance of one more goal to be top of the group, so that's why the goal at the end was disappointing, but by the same token for everything everyone has put into it over the last few weeks it is rewarding to see how they are playing and how they are enjoying their football and I am sure everybody at home was enjoying it as well.

"Confidence wise it was important that we were able to score goals. Our set plays were also a threat and that was pleasing to see.

"We want to keep momentum, we will have to think exactly about the team we want to put out against Belgium because there is an opportunity for players that need a match, but we also want to keep winning football matches. It is a nice decision to have."

  9. 'We made history today'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England 6-1 Panama

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Ashley Young said: "It was one of those games you want to be involved in. The main thing was to get the win and we have done that in some style.

"There was a bit of disappointment in the way we conceded but it shouldn’t take away from the performance. We made history today and it’s the start of something to come."

Asked about preparations ahead of the Belgium match, Young said: "The manager will pick the team for the next game but the boys are showing a lot of intensity in training because everyone wants to play, and long may that continue."

Nick Rogers: What I love about this England team is there doesnt appear to be too many big egos in the squad. They all seem to respect each other and their manager.

Justin Priestley: Really happy with our midfield and attack but our defence looks very very dodgy! Look out when we face a “real” team.

England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek: "Really happy with the performance from the boys and to win 6-1 on my first World Cup start was fantastic. Delighted."

On Belgium: "We will do everything exactly the same as we have been doing. Going into Belgium game we want to win, the pressure is not on to win but all the boys and staff will want to win."

On Harry Kane and John Stones: "For such a young captain Harry Kane is so vocal and I think everyone respects him massively in the team.

"John Stones is such a threat from set pieces and I am delighted he got two goals. Set pieces are something we work on a lot and we are glad it is coming out on the pitch."

  13. 'Our confidence showed'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

England full-back Ashley Young: "I think the confidence we had coming into the game showed. It could have been a nigh-on perfect performance, it was disappointing to concede but take nothing away from the rest of the performance. Everyone played their part today.

"I have said from the start that the togetherness in this squad is incredible. We are a team that wants to play, everyone wants the ball, no-one shies away from it.

"We have to keep working but this is the start of something good to come."

Mike Greenwood: Slight concern with the lack of chances from open play. Can't rely on set pieces, especially when you come up against decent opposition.

David Thackeray: The result was excellent. But please don't think that, other than the goals, it was a good game. There have been plenty better.

Ashley Burton: Brilliant win but put it in perspective it was Panama. They weren’t at the last World Cup four years ago and won’t be at the next. Let’s wait until the Belgium game before singing 'it's coming home'.

"It is great to get through, I remember watching four years ago and knowing how hard the lads had worked to get through. This time playing in this game it is a special moment and we wanted to do the country proud, get through to the next step and see where we can go.

"To score my first goals for England was something special, especially at a World Cup. I’d have loved to have got a clean sheet, that is something to take forward into next games and hopefully I can get a few more goals form set pieces."
