  3. 'Two Spain teams within Spain'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 1 July 2018

    Spain v Russia (15:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

The are two Spain teams within Spain. One which is more direct with the likes of Diego Costa and the other one which has helped us win for many years including Andres Iniesta.

By replacing Iniesta, Fernando Hierro has taken out one of the key elements in our team, that dictates the way we play. He has put in Asensio because he wants more directness, instead of being patient, which is what we need.

It is hard to find too many Spain fans in the sea of Russian supporters outside the Luzhniki Stadium but the ones who are here seem in pretty positive mood.

Sergio (above left), from Madrid, just answered “we’ve got Andres Iniesta, he is the best in the world” to pretty much every question about how today, and the rest of the tournament will go - apart from the scoreline. He reckons it will be 2-0 to La Roja.

Joseph (below far right), from Madrid, says: “It is a big stadium, and it is full of Russian fans, and maybe President Putin too – Spain fans are the minority but we are the better team and we will win.”

On the night the hosts lost their final group game to Uruguay, the chant of "Russ-i-ya, Russ-i-ya" reverberated around Red Square as if they had just won the World Cup – it was even louder when I walked through there earlier, and I think ear plugs will be mandatory if they beat Spain.

I would not say the mood outside the Luzhniki Stadium is exactly confident, though. Not many of the Russian fans I spoke to think their side will win. “We will pray for it,” says Kati, above.

Strangest thing seen worn in the stands has to be Speedo Mick, who went to about two seasons of Everton games in just speedos and a swimming cap, including during the winter! Raised about 90 grand for charity, I had the pleasure to donate when he was collecting in the pub pre match, absolute gent.

Russia’s progress to the last 16 has not just increased the feel-good factor among the normally pessimistic home fans, it has brought the team more support too.

Katerina, from Nizhny Novgorod, admits she does not watch much football normally but is one of hundreds of supporters outside the Luzhniki Stadium holding signs asking for tickets.

So far, she says, spares are very thin on the ground – not to mention extremely expensive.

Will Russia win? “I want to believe,” says Katerina... although not as much as she wants a ticket.

News. Quite big news. Andres Iniesta is not included in the Spain starting XI. His absence is one of three changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Morocco.

    1. What is the best way you have ever arrived to a match?

    2. What is the strangest thing you have seen someone wearing in the stands (not that Southgate's get-up is strange, but it would be odd seeing someone in a three-piece on the terraces)?

When asked about being a style icon, Southgate told BBC Sport: “I’m slightly concerned, because as a centre-half who took a lot of knocks to the head I’m not normally synonymous with being a fashion icon. I know my strengths and I know I’m no David Beckham. It shows anything is possible in life.”
