    Croatia 1-1 Denmark

Croatian left-back Ivan Strinic goes on a mazy run, blink and squint and you might see Ryan Giggs at Villa Park. Instead of skinning Martin Keown and slamming a shot into the roof of the net though he is closed out by Andreas Christensen and gives away a foul.

The Danish fans to my right are still making plenty of noise, the horns getting a solid workout.

Shortly before Ivan Perisic's miscue Luka Modric played a pass to Mario Mandzukic, who had run long when his skipper wanted him to come short.

The frustration from Modric was clear even from the top of the stands. This Croatia team have fire in their belly.

    Croatia 1-1 Denmark

Denmark force another corner, well dealt with this time. Christian Eriksen puts another ball in but Danijel Subasic is strong this time to sweep it up.

  5. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    Croatia 1-1 Denmark

Croatia should be ahead! Kasper Schmeichel makes a bit of a meal of an Ivan Rakitic shot, he beats it out, it comes back in and again he can't hold it, then there's a real chance for Ivan Perisic. He has an air shot on his right foot from 12 yards out, then leans back and smashes a second effort miles over the top!

    Croatia look dangerous.

That was the best piece of play Denmark have had in the game so far. Braithwaite's effort is poor but it's a lovely ball through by Eriksen.

Not much excitement since Dave, if we're being honest. There it is though, good move as Denmark work the ball into the area but Martin Braithwaite, on the stretch, can't get hold of a shot and it's easily saved by Danijel Subasic.

Braithwaite must surely be the first player to go on loan from Middlesbrough to Bordeaux. A real culture clash there.

Johnny: Rakitic has been Croatia’s worst player so far tonight. And by a mile.

Tony: The use of VAR has now been refined after using it to edge out the minnows. How was that not a penalty?

David: more excitement in the first four minutes of this game than in the entire first match today

Jonas Knudsen has a throw on the halfway line and still gets the ball into the area. I've seen players in the lower leagues extend their careers solely on the basis of having a huge throw. It's a real weapon.

Croatia defend this one this time.

It's the debate nobody is asking - long throw or 1k passes?

Long throw all the way. You can pass the ball a thousand times but never get the ball in the box. Strikers need feeding.

The game has slowed down but it couldn't have carried on at the same pace. It has settled into a pattern and the Danes have got to make sure they do not leave any gaps.

Denmark just can't get a hold of the ball at the moment. Christian Eriksen has only had nine touches.

As soon as I type that the Spurs man shoots, deflected away for a corner.

  13. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20 mins

    Croatia 1-1 Denmark

Croatia look a real force now, they move the ball quickly. One for Spain to watch.

Ooooh is that a pen? Mario Mandzukic goes down, Jonas Knudsen had a hand on the shoulder. Referee Nestor Pitana says no, and there's no VAR review.

That's errant from Ivan Rakitic though, screwed well too long from deep.

Zanka's goal w was the fastest goal at the World Cup since Clint Dempsey netted after 29 seconds for USA vs Ghana in 2014.

    Croatia 1-1 Denmark

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

On the team sheet, Modric is playing in the number 10 position. He is not. He is standing just inside the right-full back position because he knows that's where the space is. He is getting lots and lots of the ball now and Croatia are looking dangerous on that side.

Denmark have never scored a World Cup goal from outside the area. Looking at you Christian Eriksen...

Croatia's midfield are taking control now, as we expected. Kudos to them for rallying after that disastrous start.

Genuine question, would you rather see your side play 1,000 passes or have someone with a long throw?

No-brainer for me. Croatia now taking control though with some neat play.

A very good player isn't he? The clue's in the fact that he starts every week for Barcelona.

Rakitic hasn't had enough plaudits for me in this World Cup. Quietly outperforming most of the big guns without any fuss, fanfare or theatrics
