It's all very flat for a World Cup quarter-final. This tournament has blessed us with so much good football. But even the few poor games have carried plenty of late drama. Maybe that's what we are in for.

Gareth Southgate and his coaches have a little conference down there.

Sweden are not frightened to put long balls in behind and we can't switch off ball watching.

Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard swap passes three times in that pocket behind Harry Kane but they don't really make a decisive move and the ball breaks down. Got to move quicker there.

I really hope Sweden go out, not just for the obvious reason, but because they turn every one of their games into a battle of attrition. Exciting they are not!

  10. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 23 mins

    Sweden 0-0 England

More promising signs for England as they find Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box, he stands in a cross which is blocked by the chest/wrists of Emil Forsberg. No chance of a pen there.

Kieran Trippier then puts in a low cross straight at the keeper.

Wayne: Need to up the tempo, we have a clear pace advantage

Peter: Alli hasn't played one good game in this world cup and he's not changing that form today

Donna: I love and support England with every fibre.... But just can't say I feel this is our strongest 11

If you're just joining us you don't need to scroll on any further - the first 20 minutes were a non event but Harry Kane has just had England's first shot and put it wide from 20 yards.

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

You would fancy Harry Kane to at least hit the target from there, with the confidence he has at the minute. That has come from Sweden committing men higher up the field, and when that happens, England have to move the ball faster.

Better again, this time Ashley Young takes his man on on the left foot and puts in an early cross which is well directed but Andreas Granqvist stretches to nod it away well.

It was nearly an opportunistic effort by Kane which almost caught the keeper out. It was worth an effort.

They don't like Sterling's pace - two beanpole central defenders.

    Phil McNulty

England have had crossing opportunites on both flanks and have either taken too long to deliver or delivered badly. Gareth Southgate will hope they are just getting a bit of sluggishness out of their system after their exertions against Colombia.

It's a very scruffy game. England need to get their foot on the ball and start playing. [Sweden's pressing from England kick-offs] is suffocating us a bit.

    Sweden 0-0 England

    Chris Waddle

Sweden are trying to put a few passes together but they are not blessed with pace. They are big awkward players to play against but I think John Stones, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker have the legs on them.

  19. CLOSE!published at 20 mins

    Sweden 0-0 England

Sweden have only conceded twice at the World Cup, both to Germany - but there's a shot!

Raheem Sterling runs it well from deep, it finds Harry Kane central, about 22 yards wide, and he shoots low but just wide.
