    Sweden 0-0 England

John Stones heads the ball powerfully away but it's allowed to run through safely. The fact that I'm even mentioning that shows the level of spectacle on show in Samara so far.

Nobody will remember all this once the final whistle goes of course. But this is a match that has yet to get going at all.

That shot from Viktor Claesson is the first little bit of excitement in 12 minutes. It has been a poor start from both teams but Sweden will be happier because they have stopped England from moving the ball quickly.

England keep it nicely, Raheem Sterling prominent but on two occasions Ashley Young cuts back to his right foot and the momentum slows down a touch.

They shouldn't be surprised - we said they'll shoot on sight. Thankfully that one is high and wide.

World Cup 2018: Early chance for Sweden's Viktor Claesson against England

First shot of the game! Viktor Claesson is allowed to advance in midfield and winds up for a 25-yard strike which is always flying well over the top. Jordan Pickford is livid at his men in front of him though.

  8. 'Sloppy England'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Sweden 0-0 England

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Samara

Sloppy from England so far. Too many misplaced passes and that Sweden defence has already established its position. Will be tough to breach.

Slightly better from England as Jesse Lingard finds a ball out wide to find Kyle Walker, he puts in a cross with men in the middle but it's too close to goalkeeper Robin Olsen and he comes to claim it.

Gareth Southgate is having a little word to settle them down. It feels a bit nervy the way the game has started. It's like the handbrake is on for both sets of players.

  12. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Sweden 0-0 England

Harry Kane gets the ball in midfield, good ball on to free Raheem Sterling but that man Andreas Granqvist covers really well to clear.

    Better.

The flat pack 4 of Sweden will be tough to break down! England will need their creative players to step up with great ikeas to get the needed goals.

There's 10% of the match gone in the blink of an eye. This is a dogfight. Did you see Belgium v Brazil last night? Nothing like that.

Rob: Good early possession for ENG but little in the way of threat.

Ed: Well, we definitely have the smartest dressed manager in this World Cup.

Set-pieces will be key and Sweden's first free-kick flicks away for a throw, which will get pumped in long. Andreas Granqvist is up there and nearly nods it on. That could be a danger.

  18. 'Very tactical and very cagey'published at 15:06 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Sweden 0-0 England

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

It's been a terrible start to the match and it's definitely not Brazil v Belgium. It is very tactical and very cagey. England haven't settled and they haven't got a rhythm going. Sweden are comfortable at the moment.

And that sums it up - Dele Alli presses Emil Krafth and wins it in a good area, there's a through-ball on for Harry Kane but he overhits it.

  20. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Sweden 0-0 England

Ashley Young overhits a ball forwards. Sweden's mass retreat means the direct ball is on more often than not but there's a danger of England falling into a long ball trap.

It's a poor start in terms of quality. Sloppy, shoddy stuff. Sweden no interest in coming forwards at this stage.
