The goalposts have moved. We would have all taken a quarter-final before the tournament, but if we lose today there is no way that would be OK. If Germany, Brazil or Belgium knock you out then fair enough, but this game in particular is a big opportunity.

RM: Why is Young starting again? He's done nothing so far. Rose is a far better player in that position

Sim: Dear England, please don't make us go through penalties again!

Tom: Half way across the Atlantic, 32,000 feet up and $33 later, I have managed to get the radio on

World Cup 2018: Harry Kane scores a penalty to make it 2-0 England after Lingard is fouled

Harry Kane has scored six goals at a World Cup which is brilliant, but weirdly, I haven’t seen Tottenham's Kane out there yet.

Spurs' Kane is someone who is more selfish and shifts with it before hitting it with his right and left. There is so much emphasis on him from opposition defences so it's important for Dele Alli to get in behind him.

Jesse Lingard has been doing it but Dele has to do the same and it’s important for Sterling to step up today and show that Manchester City form.

Christian: Currently using “public transport”. Looking lively. England shirt. Black & White. Respect. No smiling. This is England. Our Country.

James: Getting ready to head to the pub in Dublin with Three Lions blasting out on repeat. Just in case my neighbours were in any doubt an Englishman lives here...

Mark: I've got world in motion blaring out, the missus is inbound with beer and munchies and the 1982 England shirt is laid out ready for kick off.

I haven't seen a game apart from Panama, where we are probing and working defenders hard enough in the final third. That is the only reason Colombia got back into the game because they still had energy after 60 minutes, so our front four need to do more.

World Cup 2018: Jesse Lingard scores a spectacular third goal for England

If you watch Jesse Lingard closely in training like I have done, you quickly understand that while he is not a player who will ever be a YouTube sensation, he brings something to the team few others can.

What I mean by that is Jesse is not a freestyle footballer with all the skills who does step overs and loads of dribbling - but there is substance to his play and always a reason or meaning behind what he does.

What makes him so good are the things he has always had, since I first saw him play as a young boy: game intelligence, speed of movement as well as speed of thought, the ability to play one or two-touch football and an eye for goal.

He has shown all of those qualities during this World Cup and I think he is going to be especially important for England in our quarter-final against Sweden.

  10. What have Sweden got?published at 13:56 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Sweden v England (15:00 BST)

The Scandinavians have a strong team dynamic with no star names after the international retirement of skilful maverick Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They finished above the Netherlands in qualifying, beat Italy in a play-off and then helped eliminate Germany by finishing above them in Group F.

That made Switzerland in the last 16 seem almost straightforward.

England and Sweden drew 2-2 in the 2006 group stages, with Joe Cole scoring a screamer. A repeat of that scoreline and 'penalty experts' England might be facing another shootout.

Former heavyweight boxing champion David Haye is also among the sporting stars at Wimbledon today and he says he will try to sneak a glimpse of the match later.

"We're going to do it," he says. "They are fresh, young, hungry lions.

"I've no doubt. This is what we've been waiting for all these years."

England are unchanged from the side who beat Colombia - Ashley Young and Kyle Walker both overcame minor problems which weren't expected to keep them out anyway.

Jamie Vardy is fit enough to be named on the bench despite a groin injury

Sweden make two changes - both of which were expected. Right-back Mikael Lustig is suspended so Emil Krafth replaces him. And Sebastian Larsson is back from a ban so he takes the place of Gustav Svensson.

  19. 'I would play Rose over Young'published at 13:43 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Sweden v England (15:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

We made changes for Belgium, which wasn't that important at the time, but he has more or less stuck with his team. I probably would've gone for Danny Rose over Ashley Young because he goes foreword more.

Elsewhere, Dele Alli's best position is off Harry Kane, but obviously Gareth Southgate prefers Raheem Sterling in there.

  20. Postpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

We thought that Dele Alli might not be fit to start today but he's in midfield. Looks like Jamie Vardy is available on the bench too.
