World Cup 2018: Powerful header from Belgium's Marouane Fellaini goes just wide

As you'd expect, Roberto Martinez was asked about his future after the game.

He said: "It’s too early to make any assessment for the tournament. We need to focus on the final game and fight for third place. Then we’ll regroup. We need to look at the younger generation and try to be stronger for the future. We have a wealth of young talent coming through.

"It is a difficult emotion to manage – you are disappointed at losing a semi-final. The next 48 hours will be important. To try to finish third in a World Cup doesn’t happen too often. It’s an important game."

  3. 'It's a sad dressing room'published at 21:53 British Summer Time 10 July 2018

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez: "We are very well organised. Today is an unfortunate situation. The composure in the final third we usually have. Sometimes the ball drops for you – Fellaini had a strong header, we had one on one situations with Hazard. Not scoring the first goal was going to be difficult with the way France are set up.

"My disappointment is huge. It wasn’t about having a good tournament and coming top four – it was about trying to win it. It’s a sad dressing room now. We could easily have come to this stage and froze. France are used to these big games but we coped with that side really well. We wanted to play seven games, we achieved that. These players deserve to finish on a high."

World Cup 2018: France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris punches away fierce Alex Witsel strike

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez: "It was a very tight game. There weren’t many big moments to decide the game. I felt we started in the second half with better tempo and were looking stronger, but that’s when we conceded from a corner.

"The difference between defeat and winning was down to one dead ball situation. That’s how close the game was. France wanted to exploit their pace on the counter attack with Mbappe and Griezmann – we coped with that well. We have to give a lot of credit to how France defended – some of their attacking players were defending deep. They gave us a lot of respect that way. Hugo Lloris had a save that could have gone into Dries Mertens’ path. That was the difference - a bit of luck

"I’m proud of my players. We gave everything we have got. You have to congratulate France and wish them well for the final."

  5. 'Finals have to be won'published at 21:42 British Summer Time 10 July 2018

France coach Didier Deschamps: "Finals have to be won because we have still not got over the one we lost two years ago."

France lost the final of Euro 2016 at home to Portugal. The side which started that final was:

Lloris; Sagna, Koscielny, Umtiti, Evra; Sissoko, Pogba, Matuidi, Payet; Griezmann, Giroud.

So just six survivors in tonight's XI.

England manager Gareth Southgate believes the best is yet to come from his maturing team - even though they are potentially 90 minutes from their first World Cup final since 1966.

France await the winners in the final, but Southgate is convinced the future is bright whatever the outcome.

He said: "This team is nowhere near the level they're going to be capable of, partly because of their age, but also because they'll have more big-match experiences over the next few years with their clubs and with us.

"We are excited about the future but we want to make the most of this opportunity as well."

Southgate is expected to name the same side that started the 2-0 quarter-final win over Sweden as he has a fully fit 23-man squad.

Phil Hurrell: If we get past Croatia just play France at their own game. Defend for most of the game and get a set piece. England can do that.

Tom Fio: I don't understand this criticism of Lukaku. He was hailed as world class last game. Now after hardly any service, not got it to make a WC final? Should be the same for KDB then based purely on tonight.

By this time tomorrow England could well know if they had reached a first World Cup final in 52 years.

Or they could be in extra time.

Or they could have lost, of course.

Will it be the Three Lions or Croatia waiting to meet France...?

I expect England to beat Croatia, they are more powerful, and they will cause France problems.

France would start as favourites but it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that England can beat them.

I think Paul Pogba plays with a freedom in this French team that if he makes a mistake, it is accepted, but he looks scared to make that same mistake in a Manchester United shirt.
