    France 4-2 Croatia

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

I think it was the wrong decision completely to give France a penalty. We can sit here and argue about it all day but one thing it does bring is entertainment. This Croatia team will feel hard done by.

Aside from his brilliant pass in the build-up to his well-taken goal, was Paul Pogba that good at this World Cup?

I'm not so sure he was noticeably much better than he has showed while playing for Manchester United.

  3. 'Down to you Jose'published at 18:02 British Summer Time 15 July 2018

    France 4-2 Croatia

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Raphael Varane needs special mention. He was a rock at the back. He defended for his life. This is a fantastic opportunity now. Look at the players France left behind! They have a deep squad and are a team who know how to win.

Paul Pogba was immense in the second half. He has had a tough season. It is down to Jose Mourinho to unlock this Paul Pogba we have seen at the World Cup.

Absolutely terrific from both sides but France stepped it up in the second half, especially their leaders with Pogba, Mbappe and Griezmann delivering. They stepped it up when they needed it the most.

You feel sorry for Croatia and have to give them so many plaudits - they have given us so much joy in the tournament. You still look at them and they will be one of the favourites for the next European Championships in two years' time, but they found a France team that knew how to kill them off in the second half.

France just want to enjoy this moment and they will party for days, they showed huge character and determination in the second half. You just want to take it all in.

You have to say Didier Dechamps' gameplans have been great without being entertaining. He has won the World Cup and that's what he came here to do.

Sometimes these games can peter out to being boring chess matches but this was anything but. Croatia deserve credit for the way they attacked France. They will feel hard done by but look what it means to France.
