Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, normally a calm and assured presence on the sidelines, certainly enjoyed that one as he punched the air.

The build-up was slick and just what the Serb would have wanted after his side have controlled the opening quarter.

    A stamp from Fredericks?published at 30 mins

    Aston Villa 0-1 Fulham

Ryan Fredericks is lucky to stay on the pitch here. He appears to deliberately stamp on Villa's Jack Grealish, two yards in front of Villa boss Steve Bruce.

    Nothing given. Bruce is furious.

Tom Cairney slotted it low beyond the goalkeeper with the first bit of decent play we've seen in the game.

Steve Bruce is looking for his fifth promotion from the Championship and, if he's to get it, his team will have to come from behind.

  4. 'A wonderful run and great finish'published at 26 mins

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It's the first move we've had - I don't think we've had anything else to talk about in the game beyond the card.

There was no mistake in the build-up or the finish - a wonderful third-man run and a great finish from Tom Cairney.

    Aston Villa fan Phil

"We were carved open too easily there. That goal is not going to help with our nerves at all.

"Villa are not looking like they have started this game yet. There's still a long way to go yet though."

Throughout the afternoon we're following Fulham fan Ben and Aston Villa supporter Phil, who are at Wembley cheering on their respective teams.

    Aston Villa 0-1 Fulham

And that's sent the Fulham fans into absolute raptures. What a noise!

Now will Villa have to come out of their shell and have a go at this Fulham side?

It's the early goal the game needed, after a very quiet start.

Lovely goal. Fulham strike first! Their star duo combine to give them the lead with the game's first real chance.

Ryan Sessegnon supplies the neat through ball and Tom Cairney supplies the calm, low finish. Simple.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Villa have not allowed Fulham in between the lines, Villa have not allowed Fulham in behind - they've kept this tight, and Fulham are just starting to play their way into it.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham

Aboubakar Kamara has Fulham's first shot, swivelling on the turn and looping one over the bar. Fulham reckon Villa keeper Sam Johnstone got a touch on it, but it's a goal kick.

To call the opening 20 minutes 'cagey' is an understatement.

It remains goalless and both keepers' gloves remain clean.

Tom Cairney upends Villa's Jack Grealish around 40 yards from goal. They take the free-kick short, eventually finding Robert Snodgrass, but his long-range shot is poor and rolls well wide.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham

We're still awaiting the first shot at goal.

Villa are almost in behind the Fulham defence for the game's first real chance, but Robert Snodgrass' through ball is slightly too heavy and runs beyond Albert Adomah.

  15. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham

    Rob Stevens
    BBC Sport at Wembley

Aleksandar Mitrovic was the signing which really gave Fulham impetus in mid-season. He has been brilliant holding the ball up for them, and drew that challenge from James Chester, who now has to be careful.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic said Villa’s defence were capable of making mistakes, and that was an early one from the Welshman, albeit minor.

James Chester is shown the game's first yellow card for a poor challenge on Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic.

To remind you, this is both sides' first play-off final.

In fact Villa - in what is their first play-off campaign - are yet to concede a play-off goal, following two semi-final clean sheets against Middlesbrough.

They've set up cautiously to start with here, happy to let Fulham have the ball.
