Players from both sides have been fraternising and chatting while we await the shootout. This seems to be taking a long old time.

Paul Gascoigne is in floods of tears now and is being comforted by Bobby Robson. Hard to watch.

It's terribly unfair for Paul Gascoigne. He's in tears. And look at the fuss that is made afterwards.

Whatever happens it has been a magnificent match. I thought England's game against Cameroon was probably the best match of the tournament but this has surpassed it. I certainly wouldn't like to be taking any of the penalties. As we saw with Italy and Argentina last night, it is such a nerve-wracker. Whoever misses, on either side, will have our sympathy.

It's penalties! England's first shootout in a major tournament. I imagine they will find this straightforward.

Why has not more been made of the fact that Platt was clearly onside for that header?? I was 8 when I watched that and would clearly have heard something sooner, even from Gary Lineker and the boys on the tv!

To win it - no! Guido Buchwald, who has been immense all game, bends one against the post. That would have been as good as a golden goal...

Paul Gascoigne needs to be careful having a go at the ref there - but I don't think he understands Geordie...

When we watched this game back to get it ready to show to you, we found there were a number of occasions when racist chanting appeared to be directed towards Paul Parker. We have edited the sound so this unacceptable abuse is now not audible but did not want to hide that it happened so we wanted to let you know.
