Peter Beardsley
High into the top right-hand corner, Illgner was nowhere near it.
Andreas Brehme
Shilton goes the right way, but Brehme's effort has too much precision.
Gary Lineker
A long run up from Lineker, but drilled into the corner.
Never looked like missing.
England will go first.
Players from both sides have been fraternising and chatting while we await the shootout. This seems to be taking a long old time.

Good old fashioned advertising hoardings instead of the rolling electronic ones of today. Love it.

Paul Gascoigne is in floods of tears now and is being comforted by Bobby Robson. Hard to watch.
Jimmy Hill
BBC Sport pundit
It's terribly unfair for Paul Gascoigne. He's in tears. And look at the fuss that is made afterwards.
John Motson says that Beardsley, Lineker, Platt, Pearce and Gascoigne are Bobby Robson's top five takers.

Whatever happens it has been a magnificent match. I thought England's game against Cameroon was probably the best match of the tournament but this has surpassed it. I certainly wouldn't like to be taking any of the penalties. As we saw with Italy and Argentina last night, it is such a nerve-wracker. Whoever misses, on either side, will have our sympathy.
West Germany 1-1 England
It's penalties! England's first shootout in a major tournament. I imagine they will find this straightforward.

Why has not more been made of the fact that Platt was clearly onside for that header?? I was 8 when I watched that and would clearly have heard something sooner, even from Gary Lineker and the boys on the tv!

On or off?
West Germany 1-1 England
To win it - no! Guido Buchwald, who has been immense all game, bends one against the post. That would have been as good as a golden goal...
It's going to go to pens isn't it?

Paul Gascoigne needs to be careful having a go at the ref there - but I don't think he understands Geordie...

Jon Gandy: So many quaint elements of time gone by in the 1990 #worldcuprewind, external by @BBCSport, external Players gathering round to share drinks from one water bottle; no backpass rule; crunching tackles with no cards, players all wearing black boots.
West Germany 1-1 England
When we watched this game back to get it ready to show to you, we found there were a number of occasions when racist chanting appeared to be directed towards Paul Parker. We have edited the sound so this unacceptable abuse is now not audible but did not want to hide that it happened so we wanted to let you know.
West Germany 1-1 England
And from the free-kick David Platt heads in - no! Offside.
West Germany 1-1 England
That's a ridiculous challenge! Andreas Brehme absolutely smashes Paul Gascoigne down from behind and he's booked.
That would be a seven-game ban now!
West Germany 1-1 England
Don't forget, of course, that David Platt scored in the very last minute of extra time against Belgium. It could happen...
