You wouldn't want it settled on penalties. You certainly wouldn't want to lose it on penalties...

Waddle, Anderton, off the post in extra-time...
West Germany 1-1 England
And we are back up and running in the second period of extra time.

Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi
Chris Waddle's shot came back off the post like a rocket, nobody could even get near it. I can't believe it, that would have given everyone a lift just before the break. A beautiful strike and the Germany keeper Bodo Ilgner could not get near it.
West Germany 1-1 England
What a strike!
My word that is close. the very last kick of the first period of extra-time!
West Germany 1-1 England
'We love you Gascoigne, we do!' is the chant from the stands. Knowledgable crowd.
In 2018, that is a yellow card all day long.
In 1990, it was the cause of much debate...
West Germany 1-1 England
Paul Gascoigne: "The ball ran loose and I thought I could get there. I suppose I'd have to say the occasion got to me, but this German guy is 6ft 5in and he dives and screams like a baby.
"For a couple of minutes I was going around in a daze. My whole world had been shattered. I had gone out of my way to steer clear of trouble and there I was - out of the World Cup final if we had won."
West Germany 1-1 England
Bobby Robson: "At the time of the booking, he was probably a bit rattled. Gary Lineker knows him well and he came over to the bench and shouted at us to watch Gazza for the next five minutes."
West Germany 1-1 England
Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi
Paul Gascoigne is almost in tears. There's no need to book him there, he's got tired legs. He's shattered.
It's been a gripping match and I just hope that doesn't affect his performance. All the Germany bench were up, encouraging the referee to book him. To miss the final after the tournament he has had would be a travesty.
West Germany 1-1 England
Oh dear. That rules Paul Gascoigne out of the World Cup final, should England get there...
West Germany 1-1 England
Great chance! Jurgen Klinsmann has suddenly come to life and he should put West Germany ahead. Great ball through, dinked into his run and he miscues his left-footed volley and puts it wide. England on the rack a bit.
West Germany 1-1 England
Save Shilts! Jurgen Klinsmann has been quiet all night but he towers over Des Walker to meet a good cross, powerful header which is straight at Peter Shilton pretty much but met very well, the veteran does well to claw it out!
West Germany 1-1 England
Paul Gascoigne is a man on a mission, holding off players and diving into tackles.
Steady now.
West Germany 1-1 England
Chris Waddle is still full of running. He can't quite link up with Peter Beardsley though, and Des Walker then makes a superb challenge at the other end.
West Germany 1-1 England
Away we go!
Well, at the second attempt.

Robert Holt: Anyone else watching the rerun of West Germany vs England from 1990 on BBC and thinking we can take this in extra time?
West Germany 1-1 England
John Motson
BBC commentator at Stadio delle Alpi
The England team have never been involved in a penalty shootout and I should imagine that if it did happen for the first time in a World Cup semi-final then I think none of us could stand the tension.
Can England go one step further and complete something of a dream - because nobody thought this team would get as close to the World Cup final as this.
A chorus of 'Rule Britannia' now inside the stadium, Bobby Robson marches into the middle and shouts at someone to 'KEEP THE BALL.'
Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand
It just shows Gary Lineker's great ability inside the box, he knows where the target is.
