Southampton boss Mark Hughes: "I thought we got better as the game went on. We changed it in the second and had any number of chances to win the game.

"We got on the front foot, stopping them hitting balls into the channel. We needed a bit of luck but overall I’m reasonably pleased.

"There’s no need for us to be apprehensive. We’re a good group of players here and we always want maximum points. We weren’t quite able to do that today but I was encouraged."

On Danny Ings' debut: "You saw Danny’s clever play today, linking and retaining possession. He allowed us to move further up the field and that augurs well. We’re looking forward to getting him up to speed."

Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Match of the Day 2: "It was a well deserved point that could have been all three. It’s not easy to dominate away from home like we did. We were good in possession and had a good shape.

"They came back into it after a change of shape and we had to show a different side to our team then as we have many times before. You to have a good mentality in the Premier League and we have a good balance of mentality and quality.

It was a pleasing performance especially after a really tough away game on Thursday night."

Southampton's Danny Ings, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It means a lot to play for Southampton.

"I’ve had such a tough time the last few years trying to break into a team that’s one of the best in Europe. I’ve come away from Liverpool to challenge myself but I don’t think I could be at a better club.

"I’m still building fitness but I feel physically great. Burnley are a difficult team to play against but in the second half we got hold of the game, I had a few chances. It was a good start to the season and if we keep playing like that the goals will come."

Liverpool goalscorer Sadio Mane, speaking BBC Match of the Day: "We did a great job and created many chances. We played well from the beginning to the end.

"We scored four and I scored twice, so I'm very happy.

"Before the goal it's always important to start the game well which is what we always try to do.

"Scoring made it more relaxed for us and we try to work hard and push as a team onto the fourth.

"We try to do our best to score goals for the team because without those we can't do anything. It's the teamwork, we do things together. We will try to score more goals.

"We have a strong team. That will help us to push hard and fight to do our best."

Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy after a clean sheet and a point against Burnley: They were the better side in the first half and we think we were better in the second half. I was just happy to keep the ball out the back of the net . It feels really nice to get a clean sheet in the first game.

On new signing Jannik Vestergaard: He’s a massive player for us. He's clearly a huge threat in the air and I fancy him to score a few from set pieces this season.

Liverpool

Liverpool's James Milner, speaking to Sky Sports: "There is expectation at the beginning of the season and everyone wants a good start.

"We've made some new signings and it was going to be a tough start.

"Last year was a long season and with the World Cup boys coming back in with such a short rest, they have done well. I've done it before and know how hard it is.

"It has benefited me [having the summer off]. It's the same with all teams with international players out and the first game after pre-season is always tough.

"Naby Keita is a good player, you can see that and he's only going to get better. Coming into a new team is not always easy. You can only imagine how good he's going to be with more time with the boys.

"He's top quality and like all the signings we've brought in there's even more competition. That's what you want."

We saw what Liverpool were capable of last year and they've got better. Keita was outstanding, Alisson bred confidence across the back four and with that front three they're a real match for anyone. It was mightily impressive and Liverpool have steam-rollered West Ham.
