Wayne Rooney has said some former England internationals "can't come to terms" with the current team doing well.

England reached the World Cup semi-finals this summer before beating Spain in the Nations League last month.

But Rooney, who earned his 120th and final cap in Thursday's 3-0 win over the United States, suggested some ex-players are jealous.

"That is wrong. I'm not like that," he said. "I'm a fan now. I want England to do well."

"I wouldn't say I regret never winning a trophy with England. I have given everything when playing for England and I've tried to make us successful. Sometimes everything just isn't enough."

  3. The last time Croatia came to Wembleypublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2018

    England v Croatia (14:00 GMT)

The last time Croatia travelled to Wembley, England thrashed them 5-1 and booked their place at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

It was their eighth successive win in a flawless qualifying campaign under then-manager Fabio Capello before another disappointing exit in the tournament itself.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard shone in midfield that day - both players picking up two goals each - while the fifth was added by Wayne Rooney.

The squad that day was regarded as one which involved many of the 'golden generation', including David Beckham and John Terry.

England squad: Green, Johnson, Terry, Upson, Ashley Cole, Lennon (Beckham 80), Barry, Lampard, Gerrard (Milner 81), Rooney, Heskey (Defoe 60).

Subs Not Used: Foster, Brown, Bridge, Crouch.

I don’t think I’ve ever come to a football match where both teams can win to reach a semi-final and both can be relegated, so this really is a unique occasion.

Paul Lummis: England are a team with the same quality as in the World cup, but more confidence due to the win against Spain. Last game against Croatia they were by far the better team, save for a lack of finish. If they can sort that out today, there's no reason to not win.

  6. England's glimpse of the futurepublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2018

    England 3-0 USA

Gareth Southgate saw "a glimpse of the future" as England celebrated Wayne Rooney's final international appearance with a comfortable friendly win over the United States on Thursday.

Southgate gave debuts to three players and they all impressed, with Bournemouth forward Callum Wilson's goal capping an industrious performance up front.

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk and Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, a second-half substitute, were barely tested but both were solid on their first appearances, while Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho played the full game as he won his second cap.

Rooney, winning his 120th cap in a fund-raiser for his charitable foundation, made a 33-minute appearance on a night England showed their appreciation for their 33-year-old record goalscorer.

Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold also scored his first England goal as they ran out as comfortable winners.

    England v Croatia (14:00 GMT)

Here's how the visitors Croatia will line-up today:

World Cup star Luka Modric is in the starting XI, alongside Ivan Perisic and Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren.

But there's no place for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who has picked up a knock.

  9. Relegation, promotion and what England needpublished at 12:59 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2018

    England v Croatia (14:00 GMT)

It's four months on from Croatia's semi-final win in Russia and it's an all-or-nothing game that will settle both promotion and relegation from Group A4.

The winner will top the group and seal a place in the last four, with the loser dropping to the second tier.

A score draw in London would also send the Three Lions down.

This is because if teams are level on points, they are separated by head-to-head record, including the away goals rule if necessary, before goal difference comes into play - and England drew 0-0 in Rijeka.

A goalless draw is the only result which would see England finish second - meaning they would neither reach the finals nor be relegated.

    Here are the permutations:

England win - England win the group and go into the semis; Croatia relegated

Croatia win - Croatia win the group and go into the semis; England relegated

Score draw - Croatia finish second in the group on away goals; England relegated

Goalless draw - England finish second in group on goal difference; Croatia relegated

  12. 'We are a better side'published at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2018

    England v Croatia (14:00 GMT)

Gareth Southgate thinks England are a better side than the one which lost to Croatia in this summer's World Cup semi-final.

"We've learned with every experience that we've had," he said. "We've added more depth to the squad in terms of some more young players emerging; more competition for places.

"We've had a slight change of system which has also added something different, so we've got some flexibility in how we can play.

"We've wanted to keep improving and I think the players have shown that mentality as well."

    England v Croatia (14:00 GMT)

England make eight changes to the side which beat USA 3-0 on Thursday.

Jordan Pickford, Fabian Delph and Ben Chilwell are the only three players to remain in the starting XI. But Dele Alli has been left out of the side.

There is no place for Jordan Henderson in the squad so Ross Barkley is handed a start in midfield alongside Eric Dier.

Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford all come into the attack.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Chilwell, Dier, Gomez, Stones, Barkley, Delph, Kane, Sterling, Rashford

Subs: Alexander-Arnold, Butland, Lingard, Dunk, Keane, Sancho, Shaw, Winks, Alli, McCarthy, Loftus-Cheek, Wilson

  16. Bad memories for Englandpublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2018

    England v Croatia

A crunch match against Croatia at Wembley? That's something England fans know all too well... (though we try to forget!)

England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 after losing 3-2 to Croatia at Wembley in 2007 thanks to a 77th-minute winner from Mladen Petric.

Scott Carson made a howler too and it was the night Steve McClaren was labelled the 'wally with the brolly'.

All-in-all, a terrible evening for the Three Lions.
