Scott Cameron: How can Jose say last year was one of his biggest achievements. Finished a country mile behind City and were easily the most boring team in the league to watch. He should be trying to win the league, not finish 2nd. Sounds like he is trying to engineer his exit.

The whole reason why Paul Pogba's future is in doubt is because he wants to enjoy his football again. The first public utterance from Mourinho after Pogba won the World Cup was how he needs to do that at Manchester United.

Pogba is young enough to take his future into his own hands. If he decides he wants to go, who could blame him?

Paul Milton: United's problem is Jose. Give a less negative manager those players and we'd score loads. He's lost the ability to motivate.

Jean Leita: The way I see it, United need a rock in defence so that the rest of the team don't have to defend too. Someone like Toby Alderweireld can inspire defensive confidence and stability allowing others to remain upfield. Then again Mourinho likes his defensive play so what do I know.

Mourinho also gave an update on the injury front for his side's Premier League opener against Leicester, which is only happening tomorrow.

When asked who would be missing from his side, he replied: "Romero, Valencia, Rojo, Dalot, Herrera, Matic are all injured. The ones who played late in the World Cup trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, today. They are not fit and ready but we have needs."

With the Harry Maguire situation, Manchester United might instead look at Toby Alderweireld, who when he was fit and playing regularly was part of the best defence in the country at Tottenham Hotspur.

I think that move is much more likely given the stance that Leicester's owners have taken.

On Sunday, Mourinho said Manchester United would be in for a "difficult season" if they failed to sign anyone else.

Today Mourinho has said his side is "ready" for the new campaign, this despite being without six players for Friday's game against Leicester, including Ander Herrera, who was injured against Bayern Munich at the weekend.

He wanted another centre-half but it appears there was no truth to the rumour that in the absence of alternatives, a late move for Kurt Zouma was in the offing.

  7. 'Last season one of my best achievements'published at 09:42 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

More from Jose Mourinho, who defended himself from what he perceives to be unfair criticism.

"It is difficult for me to believe we finished second last season, when I read or hear these things," he said. "The media are capable of making people who finished second look like they got relegated and people who finished below us look like serial winners. I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues, to finish second last year was one of my best achievements."

I'm with you in being bemused over the Manchester United centre-back shenanigans. They've got loads of them.

Remember when Smalling and Jones were going to be the United and England centre-back pairing for a decade?

Is he giving Ed Woodward a not-very-gentle nudge?

Jose Mourinho has been speaking about the chances of bringing in an extra signing before the 17:00 BST deadline.

As I suggested yesterday. Not good.

"I am not confident. The market closes today. It is time for me to stop thinking about the market. I have to focus on the players I have and the next few matches."

Ant: My second year medical school didn't go so well. Late night cramming saw me oversleep for a 10am resit exam. I arrived by cab 20 mins late. The following week I was kicked out of uni for not even turning up to the genetics oral exam. They'd told everyone (else) just before the 10am exam, it would be two days earlier than previously announced. But I got there in the end. I'm slightly more understanding when patients arrive late to see me as a GP now 30 years later.

All the signs are pointing towards a quiet end to the transfer window for Liverpool and, compared to past occasions, this time it’s for all the right reasons.

Make no mistake, The Reds have done great business this transfer window. In fact, take 2018 as a whole. The January arrival of Virgil van Dijk helped shore up what had for too long been a leaky defence.

Naby Keita will bring a creative spark that has been absent since Philippe Coutinho's exit. Fabinho could be the holding midfielder we’ve been longing for since Javier Mascherano left.

Alisson’s big-money move will hopefully mean we don’t have to talk out of turn about goalkeepers ever again. Even Xherdan Shaqiri looks a totally different player to what we thought we were getting.

James: I took my daughter to a university open day along with her mum - stayed overnight as it was a 500 mile round trip. Then arrived at the uni to find that they had failed to tell me the date had been changed. The open day had taken place two days earlier. We had a very quiet 250 mile journey home!

  16. 'Returning faces as good as signings'published at 09:22 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

Our summer business has been pretty stunning. A big wedge for the promising Richarlison, the arrivals of Gerard Deulofeu, Adam Masina, Marc Navarro and Ken Sema ticking boxes that needed ticking and the signing of Ben Foster and extraordinary retention of Abdoulaye Doucoure meaning that we now have seven previous players of the season on the books. So much for a team with no identity.

In terms of deadline day activity there are fringe players that could leave, and if we're fussy we could do with an extra option up front and a dominant centre-back.

But our biggest new faces might be the returning names that missed so much of last season - Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Cleverley, Younes Kaboul, Craig Cathcart. Many will have us down as relegation candidates, certainly a side that will struggle if we are unlucky with injuries. Thing is, we've had that season twice and stayed up anyway. Bring it on.

Camarasa is understood to be in South Wales for a medical ahead of the close of the transfer window at 17:00 BST.

Tom Bartlett: I too pulled an all nighter to hand in a uni essay on deadline day, had a seizure as a result. Woke one hour after the deadline, panicked and tried to hand it in late, only to find I had finished it and handed it in before the clock ran out whilst in my pre-seizure daze... don't remember a thing...

EPH: Caught out by the clock. I live in NL and booked a hotel to visit my mate Tom’s wedding. On the morning of the wedding, I got dressed up and was driving to the location and rang my friends to see where they were, the wedding was a week later. Sorry Tom!

Paul: In 1991 I went to Monaco to watch them play Roma in the UEFA cup, got there two weeks early as the game was in Rome that night...

Who could forget when West Ham signed Argentina pair Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano from Corinthians in 2006?

Mascherano could not get in the team in front of Hayden Mullins and Nigel Reo-Coker and joined Liverpool six months later.

He went on to win five Spanish titles and two Champions League with Barcelona. Mullins and Reo-Coker *checks notes to make sure* have not won either trophy.

There were plenty of legal ramifications from this double transfer too.

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Chinese billionaire owners + Jorge Mendes = Delightful Deadline Day.

This could be the most exciting last day of the summer transfer window at Wolves for many a year. More so because anybody might be coming through the door (within reason of course, even we are realistic)!

Leander Dendoncker, Pepe, Domagoj Vida and Oleksandr Zinchenko (with the additional Portuguese international thrown in) are just some of the names being linked over the past few days and anyone of them, if not all of them, could still sign up to the ‘Nunolution’.

What do Wolves still need? The club are looking for additions to the spine of the side. A centre-back, central midfielder and a striker would be nice, but less likely on the latter.
