Earlier on, I said that the Premier League may have inadvertently caused itself problems by opting to stop trading early.

We have some experts to provide an explanation for what I was banging on about....

Newcastle United

In normal circumstances Salomon Rondon might be considered a half decent signing. But Mike Ashley's Newcastle United don't deal in normal circumstances. Many Newcastle fans are currently engaged in a debate about the rights and wrongs of boycotting the club altogether and a season-long loan signing from West Brom isn't going to change that.

The source of the angst? Ashley. He told the fans a year ago that every penny generated by the club would be made available to Rafa Benitez. Like so much of what the man says, that is not proving to be the case.

There's a misconception that Newcastle fans feel we should be competing with the likes of Manchester City in the transfer market. With our two biggest signings having occurred in 2005 and 1996, and a pitiful net expenditure over the 10 years of Ashley's reign, I'd be happy to compete with the likes of Fulham.

Incidentally, that will be the last time we speak of anything slamming shut. In my experience, windows don't slam. They get stuck, require persuasion to be moved and eventually result in an injured finger.

Yep, it's the new, earlier, transfer deadline day.

The English top flight has decided that transfer business after the season begins is too much of a disruption and so, for the first time, the window closes before anyone gets on to the pitch.

Which leads to two problems.

1. A lot of clubs have barely seen some players since the World Cup ended.

2. The rest of Europe can still sign players for a couple of weeks.

This year, English football is having its own back to school moment. That feeling of something creeping up on you before you're anywhere near ready.

The World Cup final was only 25 days ago. Now, Premier League clubs are facing the last opportunity to get their cheque books out.

There is (and was) one crushing moment for all of us. Often, it came about needlessly early. About 1 August.

You were somewhere near a large department store and, horribly, caught a glimpse of a sign that shouted "Back to School".

Before you knew it, you were in C&A trying on a navy blue jumper.
