    Crystal Palace

A Crystal Palace fan meltdown was reaching peak levels by the end of July. Yohan Cabaye and Bakary Sako had refused new contracts, leaving on free transfers. Meanwhile, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek had both returned to their parent clubs, yet no outfield reinforcements appeared to be on the horizon. Then, in the space of a couple of days Cheikhou Kouyate arrived from West Ham and the Eagles pulled off one of the biggest coups of the window with the free signing from Schalke of “the German Messi”, Max Meyer. The meltdown had been successfully cooled by Steve Parish and co.

Goalkeeper Vicente Guaita's arrival from Getafe on a free transfer seems to have flown under the radar. Getafe conceded just 33 goals in 38 games during the 2017-18 La Liga season, with only Atletico Madrid and Barcelona conceding fewer goals.

  5. Quiet day at Anfieldpublished at 09:12 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    David Ornstein
    BBC Sport

Liverpool are expecting a very quiet final day of the window. There will be no more signings at Anfield - they haven’t made a single enquiry for a player since recruiting Alisson on 19 July.

Departures are possible - there is lots of domestic interest in striker Danny Ings, in particular - but nobody is close to a move and the entire squad is scheduled to report to training at 12:00 BST for a 13:30 BST start, so time is running out.

Liverpool will utilise the transfer window remaining open for sales and loan deals to European clubs until 31 August, so that could well help the likes of Simon Mignolet and Ings secure transfers.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is, however, very happy for Ings to stay if nothing materialises.

  6. Bryan on the move?published at 09:11 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

BBC Radio Bristol's Richard Hoskin: "The future of Bristol City left-back Joe Bryan will finally be resolved today. All signs pointed to a move to Championship rivals Aston Villa, but latest reports suggest Fulham have dramatically come in at the 11th hour, and as things stand a move to Craven Cottage could now be on the cards.

"If Bryan leaves Ashton Gate, the assumption is Bristol City will have a replacement lined up for the 24-year-old."

  7. Cardiff ditch plans to sign a strikerpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

    BBC Sport Wales

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock had been keen on adding two midfielders and a striker before close of business, but looks now set to ditch plans for a forward to prioritise the middle of the park.

Harry Arter is a player Warnock likes and has spoken with the Cherries about a loan deal, but Bournemouth are holding out for a permanent switch with a £10m price tag.

Cardiff have spoken to other targets with Real Betis midfielder Víctor Camarasa being heavily linked with the Premier League new boys.

  8. Arter heading to Cardiff?published at 09:05 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

Premier League new boys Cardiff have made an official approach for Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter.

The 28-year-old midfielder is open to a move after fearing his first team chances will be reduced following Eddie Howe’s summer spending.

He has not played a league game for the Cherries since January and has three years left on his contract.

  14. More departures than signings at Leicester?published at 08:52 British Summer Time 9 August 2018

Will he stay or will he go now?

With the Riyad Mahrez transfer saga finally over, it now becomes the Harry Maguire show. Leicester have been linked with probably every centre-back going, but as proved with the prolonged Mahrez transfer, Leicester City are no longer a selling club and I think our owners will do their best to hold onto him. That said a potential £75m may just be a tad hard to turn down.

I thought there would have been more outgoings than just Ahmed Musa so far with Danny Simpson, Andy King, Bartosz Kapustka, Islam Slimanai and Leonardo Ulloa all possible leavers, so our transfer day could see more leave than arrive as we try to cut our squad size.

I think Harry Maguire will still be a Leicester player tomorrow. I know the Leicester owners reasonably well and they will be determined to keep a player of his stature unless a ridiculous offer comes in.

To get Maguire, Manchester United will have to pay well over the odds, something in the region of £100m. Are they really going to pay that?

You can almost hear the groans when a sports reporter gets told they'll be spending transfer deadline day reporting 'live' from Staplewood - Southampton's training centre. Why? Because, most of time, absolutely nothing happens at all!

This transfer deadline day appears it could go the same way, with Mark Hughes having outlined at the weekend that the club were "probably at a point where we are not likely to do any business".

Saints have already spent £51m this summer on Stuart Armstrong, Moi Elyounoussi, Angus Gunn and Jannik Vestergaard, but fans are still incredibly concerned about where the goals are going to come from.
