  1. McKenna blow for Donspublished at 30mins

    Aberdeen 0-1 Rangers

Not only are Aberdeen now a goal behind but they lose the towering presence of Scotland centre-half Scott McKenna.

The 21-year-old wanted by Swansea goes off with an injury and replaced with midfielder Chris Forrester.

That means Graeme Shinnie has to move back to left-back - a double blow for the Dons considering his usual tenacity in midfield.

  2. goal

GOAL Aberdeen 0-1 Rangerspublished at 29mins

    James Tavernier

James Tavernier tucks the penalty kick low into the corner and it evades the outstretched fingers of goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

  3. PENALTYpublished at 28mins

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

Aberdeen are doing little to suggest they can break down this rebuilt Rangers defence despite having a man advantage and they concede a penalty when Dominic Ball hauls back Josh Windass.

The Rangers players surround the referee wanting a red card, but they have to settle for a spot kick.

That could be the end of Morelos at Rangers. I'm not saying it will be, but he's not been consistent, he's moody and then he goes and does that on the first day of the season

After Rangers' promising start, the tables have turned with that sending off.

It has been Aberdeen with all the possession, but the visitors look to have survived the initial pressure and are coming back into the game.

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

The fourth official confirms that Morelos is off for violent conduct. Aberdeen tails now up after being under pressure early on. Steven Gerrard showed absolutely no emotion as his striker headed for the tunnel.

I thought Windass might move up front, but Rangers are just sitting in a tight 4-5 formation and trying to see this difficult period out

  10. No-one up front for Rangerspublished at 15mins

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

At the moment, Rangers are playing without a striker.

It is long road to survive with 10 men against last season's runners-up.

Meanwhile, some fans have lost the rag and a few objects have landed on the pitch.

  12. RED CARD Alfredo Morelospublished at 11mins

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

This fixture's tradition of being a stormy affair and that continues as Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is sent packing.

Scott McKenna barges into the Colombian, who apparently retaliates seconds later.

  15. 'Murphy should score twice'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

    Billy Dodds
    Former Rangers striker on Sportsound

    Quote Message

Jamie Murphy should score twice, for me. It's a straight ball that got Aberdeen in trouble. Joe Lewis stays big and blocks then it comes back in and Murphy completely misses it from four yards

  16. CLOSE!published at 4mins

    Aberdeen 0-0 Rangers

It's 100mph stuff at Pittodrie and Rangers threaten with the first bit of controlled passing.

Connor Goldson's long pass out of defence catches out the Dons defence and finds former Brighton team-mate Jamie Murphy in the clear.

But the winger hesitates and goalkeeper Joe Lewis saves at the winger's feet.

The Dons remain under pressure and, when Ryan Jack finds Scott Arfield inside the penalty box, the midfielder should do more than curl his shot into Lewis' arms.

  17. McKenna in the spotlightpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

    Aberdeen v Rangers (13:00)

With TV cameras at Pittodrie, focus will again be on Aberdeen's Scott McKenna.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said the Scotland centre-half is too good for England's Championship after receiving an enquiry from Swansea City for the 21-year-old.

McInnes thinks McKenna has the quality to go straight to the Premier League - and he was backed up by comments from Burnley striker Sam Vokes in the Sunday papers.

Lewis Ferguson, the young Dons midfielder signed from Hamilton, will also have a few scouts looking at him after his spectacular overhead kick against Burnley.

Steven Gerrard looking focused as he strides up past the goading Aberdeen fans towards the technical areas. We’re about to find out what he’s all about, up against the side who he’s been tasked with replacing as the best of the rest. It’s a fixture that rarely disappoints. We’re ready to go in the north east sunshine.
