At Newcastle there's an obvious distance between the board and the fans. It says it all when the owner, Mike Ashley, has only met Rafa Benitez four times, he's not been backed in the transfer market and it needs to change.

Manchester United's front three of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku have been picked together just once before this season.

It was for, arguably, United's best performance of the season, a 3-0 win at Young Boys of Switzerland in the Champions League last month.

Mourinho could really do with this paying off.

    Is it D-Day for Mourinho?

Gary: Of course we should've given Giggs the job straight away. No team is ever guaranteed of winning! Entertaining football and playing for the shirt comes before winning every time for me and most fans I'd imagine!

Mic: If a manager doesn’t have the players playing his way, he adapts the style to maximize his players abilities. Jose is trying to force square pegs into his round holes and will not adapt.

Matthew: Us match going fans have turned against Jose. We don't like his purchases, his football style, weekly changes to the squad & his man management style towards Shaw, Rashford, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Lindlelof, Bailly, Pogba & Sanchez...United must act now.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Mirror journalist David McDonnell - who broke the initial story of Jose Mourinho's imminent sacking - said: "Behind the scenes, Jose Mourinho has reached the point of no return.

"He feels the club haven't backed him and the board cannot allow this situation of unrest in the dressing room to continue.

"Sir Alex Ferguson never washed his dirty linen in public but we've seen it before with Mourinho when it all ended at Chelsea.

"Mourinho was given a contract extension at Old Trafford this year, and the assumption was that he was going to be backed in the transfer market, but he wasn't. Playing Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera at centre-half were very public messages to the board that he hasn't been backed.

"Zinedine Zidane is a name that has been put in the frame. This club like to have a plan in process, and a replacement lined up before they move, so any delay suggests they haven't got their man lined up yet."

Quite the 24 hours or so for Manchester United and their manager.

Is Jose Mourinho about to be sacked - regardless of this result?

    So the Mirror reckon.

It's not going to be boring anyway...
