Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, speaking to Match of the Day: "I am really very happy for Alvaro [Morata]. He improved in the last month in confidence and personality. He improved also from a tactical and technical point of view. He plays with more continuity from the team. He has great potential physically and technically. He can improve more. Potentially he can be (a top striker at a top club). Sometimes he is a little bit fragile.

"We were a little bit in trouble so we needed some quality and personalty. We were lucky because we had Eden [Hazard] on the bench. He was able to immediately change the match.

"From the first day, Manchester City and Liverpool are at the moment a step ahead of us. When I arrive the gap from last season as 30 points with City. It is difficult to think you can recover this gap in one season, in six months. We need to improve more because we are doing well.

"We need to improve from a tactical point of view. In the first 15 minutes of the second half we were not compact. In the defensive phase we need to improve. When we can't cover the ball in the opponent's half we are in trouble. So we need to improve."

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was very happy with Eden Hazard's contribution. And he was pretty chuffed to be picking up all three points again.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to Sky Sports: "At the start of the second half we were playing well enough to get back into the game.

"In that moment we were looking good and looked capable of holding onto it. But we were always going to find it difficult. They have players with incredible quality. I am proud.

"I am disappointed that the rewards for our efforts weren't better. There was no whistle from the referee and a free-kick was given. We had to defend it and we didn't so they scored a goal.

"I don't think we were confronted with lots of goal chances and we kept them at bay pretty well but they were clinical. I don't think we were battered by Chelsea today. We knew it was going to be tough, we gave it our best shot and came out second best.

"You have to keep going. I am convinced that the way we play, the players we have and the determination we show, things will start to turn around.

"We were playing a team with incredible talent and confidence but we managed to keep them at bay at times and created a few chances ourselves."

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has scored four goals in his last four Premier League games – one more than in his previous 23 appearances in the competition combined (3).

Eden Hazard has assisted in three consecutive Premier League appearances as a substitute – only the third player to achieve this in Premier League history (also Tomasz Radzinski in March 2004 and Arjen Robben in April 2005).

He assisted Morata’s second goal just 91 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend has scored three Premier League goals against Chelsea – more than he has against any other opponent.

Maurizio Sarri is unbeaten in his first 11 Premier League games as Chelsea manager – this is the joint-longest unbeaten start by a Premier League manager, equalling the record set by Frank Clark in 1994.

Good news Chelsea fans, this is a promising stat...

Chelsea are undefeated in their opening 11 Premier League matches of this season (W8, D3, L0) - they won the league in the previous two seasons they achieved this (2005-06 and 2014-15).

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace goalscorer Andros Townsend, speaking with Sky Sports: "We came out in the second half firing and wanted to get in their faces. We did that and scored. But then Chelsea scored for a set-piece and we have just come up short.

"The minimum you have to do against top teams is not concede form set-plays. You need to make one of their world-class players do something special. We will learn from that and the mistakes we made today.

On his goal: "It was a nice move. I slotted it away. At the time we had momentum, were pressing them and if anyone was going to win it it would be us. But we got hit with a sucker punch."

On his side's poor run: "It is difficult. We are playing well enough and creating chances. We battled back last week but we couldn't do it today. Good thing is that there is another game not far away."

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata speaking to Sky Sports: "I can score a hat-trick so it was not the perfect day but we will take the three points. That is the most important thing for us. We want to fight until the end for the Premier League.

"We played good today. I think a lot about the hat-trick but I am improving and I want to keep helping my team to win.

"Palace score to make it 1-1 so we knew we needed to go and win it and stay at the top with the other teams. We needed the three points.

"It is very hard because the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world. It will be very difficult. We want to take all the points. It is the only way to try to fight for the league.

"When you have a bad period, it takes long to recover. Last year was difficult for me for many things. You don't expect an injury but now I am good, it is nice to be scoring."

Girish Santhosh: Chelsea lack quality wingers to help morata score tap-ins. Willian and Pedro have been useless for months, hazard just plays wherever he wants...need an out and out winger this January.

Oh no- I don't get that one, Álvaro Morata trying to chip a goal keeper who is 6 foot 7. Just slot it in the bottom corner. That would be the last thing in my mind, trying to chip Wayne Hennessey.

He will think about that because the only thing you think about is the one negative. What a chance it was to get his third.

And that's it. All over.

Chelsea move up into second place. Palace remain three points above the relegation zone.

Alvaro Morata definitely should have had a hat-trick!

Chelsea clear the corner and it's two-on-one. Eden Hazard slips it through for Morata - who only has the keeper to beat - but he chips it straight into his outstretched hands.

The ref will be keeping the ball.

David Luiz' pass is intercepted by Andros Townsend. He goes alone and creates space to get a shot away on the edge of the box.

It's deflected out for a corner.

Wilfried Zaha beats Pedro to the ball and tries to create something for himself on the edge of the box. There's three Chelsea defenders around him though and after a few stepovers, the ball is nicked away.

Pedro threads a ball through for Alvaro Morata but Luka Milivojevic's slight touch just takes it away from him and Wayne Hennessey gets his hands on it.

Alvaro Morata has been offside far too many times. I don't know if it is a concentration thing or a lazy thing but we expect more.

When you talk about players like Morata, they have so much ability so you want to see them doing it more often.

Luka Milivojevic is in the book - the first player of the match. He kicks Cesc Fabregas in the back of his shins. No complaints there.

Marcos Alonso's cross almost reaches Pedro but it bobbles through and Alvaro Morata is then flagged offside.

The game is just fizzling out now.
