Jon Connor: Chelsea excellent going forward, but our defence needs to be more formidable. Chelsea contenders, not without strengthening at the back.

Steven: How come people keep asking if Chelsea are contenders? course they are. They've more pedigree than anyone for winning titles including Cheque Guardiola.

  2. 'Sterling is more mature'published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2018

    FT: Man City 6-1 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Guardiola, speaking to Match of the Day: "We played excellent, without and especially with the ball. We were aggressive in the final third. But we were lucky to score the goal in the last minute of the first half. The game was not over, because we concede. Southampton created more chances than most teams this season. Normally we concede two, three four shots on target, but this game we concede a lot. They have one of the best free-kick and corner takers in the premier League so they always create chances. That is 4-1 was good for our side.

On Raheem Sterling: "I would like him to be happy to play for Man City not for me. We will not always play together. He is confident and aggressive with the ball. He has a desire to score. He is more mature now than he was when we first met at the club. He believes more in himself. Hopefully he can be more ambitious and think he can improve. He is 23 and he can be a better player."

Crystal Palace have got no shame in playing the way have today.

Chelsea have been fantastic going for the title, it's a hard place to come and get a win.

Yes, Chelsea are contenders for the title, it is a five horse race.

  7. 'We didn't match physically and technically'published at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2018

    FT: Man City 6-1 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Mark Hughes speaking to BBC Sport: "We were poor in that opening period, you have to be resolute to keep back an outstanding City team. We were a bit lightweight and didn't deal with one-on-one situations. Very quickly we found ourselves 3-0 down and the game was gone.

"I thought we gave a better account in the second half.

"If you try and take the positives we took the game to them in the second half but we were always at risk of the counter. Given the quality they've got they're just very clinical. We just didn't have enough to match them technically and physically.

"Shane Long, credit to him, he gets stick but he gives us a lot more and he led the line really well."

Andros Townsend teases Cesar Azpilicueta with a few stepovers before playing it inside to Luka Milivojevic.

He then plays in Patrick van Aanholt, who tries to find the top corner with a curling effort, only to see it swing off target and into the stands.

Lovely build-up play, shame about the finish - or lack of.

    Beautiful finish, well worked.

Credit to Sarri for the subs, they've changed the flow of the game, Chelsea are more dynamic. Crystal Palace must have been delighted to be in the game for an hour then looked over to the bench and seen Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic coming on and felt deflated.

  13. League lead not decisive - Guardiolapublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2018

    FT: Man City 6-1 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "First 20 minutes was excellent. Offensively good but we concede a lot of chances. The attacking gave me a good feeling but we didn't defend quite well enough. But 6-1 so I have to be satisfied.

"We were lucky to score the fourth goal at the end of the first half otherwise the second half would be difficult. We were creating a lot of chances but when Southampton won a lot of second balls.I know the quality of Southampton and their players so this is a good result.

On being top of the table: "It is not decisive. It is important to be there than below but the distance of two or three points is nothing. We saw Arsenal yesterday and how good they did against Liverpool. Tottenham too, away at Wolves. United are always there. It is a tough league but it is important we are stable. It is most important that we don't have regrets."

    Brilliant finish, sensational finish.

How the ball fell to him I'll never know, Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace will be fuming. Let me tell you that was a brilliant finish from the Spaniard.

Listen he hasn't been good enough today but as a center forward you'd be happy with that. Eden Hazard must have been on the pitch a matter of seconds and he's already got an assist.

Well, a lot of difference apparently.

Eden Hazard's free-kick bounces straight through a crowd of players in the box and out to Alvaro Morata on the far post.

The striker drills it into the far corner and looks absolutely delighted as he runs off in celebration. He's just increased his goals tally for the Premier League season by 50% in one game.

  19. Pep: A joy to manage this teampublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2018

    FT: Man City 6-1 Southampton

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Pep Guardiola has just said it is 'a joy' to manage Manchester City.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Guardiola outlined how willing City's players are to follow his instructions.

He said: "If, when we leave, the players have improved, we will have done our job well."

However, he did warn about defensive frailties.

He says if City defend like they did today at the back end of the Champions League knock-out phase they will be in trouble.
