I think referee Anthony Taylor might have left his cards at home tonight. Which, for one, I'm not complaining about.

Newcastle look like they're trying to play on the counter attack and protect their lead a little bit.

They have only had two shots on target and scored two goals. I think you'd call that clinical.

Time for a change. Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez tells Joselu to take off his tracky and brings the Spaniard on for Salomon Rondon.

It sure wasn't pretty but it was almost effective for Burnley.

The ball stays in the cold Lancashire air for about 30 seconds as the heads and feet of Federico Fernandez and Sam Vokes operate like pinball flaps.

Eventually the ball drops to Chris Wood who lashes a low shot straight at Toon keeper Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle right-back DeAndre Yedlin, whose cross was stuck wide by Matt Ritchie, lofts in another ball to the back post, where Salomon Rondon is lurking. The big Newcastle striker gets off the ground but is outjumped by the home defence.

More about perspiration rather than inspiration this match...

Simon Hayes: Seeing that Ritchie miss makes me think I probably could've been a Premier League player. I'd at least have hit the post from there!

There's a real lack of quality at times and you can understand why both of these teams are down at the bottom of the table.

A goal could come from anywhere. Both sides lacking inventiveness in the final third.

Not Matt Ritchie's finest 15 minutes it has to be said...

Matt Ritchie see his moment of redemption flash before him... a ball into the box from the right isn't cleared by the Burnley defence and bounds invitingly towards the Scotland international...

...but communication lines between him and Salomon Rondon are muffled, the pair crashing into each other and the chance being lost.

Burnley have to use every single set-piece to their advantage. That's how they'll get back into this game - it's not going to be through intricate play around the box.

Robbie Brady's first corner is deep and goes over the heads of his team-mates in the Newcastle box. The Republic of Ireland winger gets another chance... hits a defender.

Better from Burnley. Charlie Taylor sticks on the gas down the left, but Kenedy is sticking with him and concedes a corner...

A break in play - as Sam Vokes gets treatment - means the television viewers are shown that Matt Ritchie miss another few times...

Newcastle have started the second half as well as they started the first half. Minus the goals.

The game has a very lacklustre tempo, especially from Burnley. At home, you expect them to come out and have a real go at Newcastle but, just as in the first half, they've sat back.

The Burnley fans aren't happy with what they're watching. A few jeers greet Robbie Brady's half-hearted attempts to beat Mohamed Diame to the ball, before Kenedy whacks a rising shot into Row J.
