Here we go then. The players, with a healthy number of short sleeves on show on a cold East Lancashire night, are strolling out of the tunnel.

Arcade Fire's stonecold classic 'Wake Up' accompanies them. Let's hope we're not falling asleep while watching this over the next couple of hours...

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, speaking to Sky Sports earlier: "Sometimes the international break is bad when you have the momentum and sometimes it is good when it gives you more time with injuries."

On Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey not making the starting XI: "They were both close, Jonjo is obviously on the bench, but I thought the midfield is doing well so got to give them the opportunity."

On the importance of this game: "It's important to approach every game correctly, not just this one, but it is tight at the bottom and hopefully we can get all three points."

    Burnley v Newcastle (20:30 GMT)

    • Burnley have won just one of their last eight home league games (D2, L5).
    • The Clarets have fewer than 10 points after the opening 12 fixtures of a Premier League campaign for the first time.
    • They have had the fewest shots on target (30) and also faced the most (82) in the Premier League prior to the weekend fixtures.
    • Burnley have gone 55 Premier League games without being awarded a penalty since Sam Vokes scored from the spot in a 3-1 defeat at Everton in April 2017.

    Burnley v Newcastle (20:30 GMT)

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports earlier: "We've had a good couple of weeks together, training has been good and the lads coming back from international duty have had a couple of days with the group.

"Our mentality is improving again, the last few games we have shown better mentality in the challenge.

"It wasn't missing before, just not quite at the level we needed it to be. It is tight margins. It's getting that consistency."

  12. 'Burnley had difficult run'published at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2018

    Burnley v Newcastle (20:30 GMT)

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez does not believe Burnley's Europa League campaign has hindered their form and says Sean Dyche's men are better than the league table suggests.

"I have had this experience of Europe and it is quite difficult to manage, but you have to adapt," the Spaniard says.

"Burnley are a strong team at home and maybe it because they have had a difficult run against some top teams.

"Sean Dyche did a great job last season and I think he is quite a strong character. They will want to get three points against us because we are close in the table and the pressure is more or less the same."

    Burnley v Newcastle (20:30 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson's predictions

Newcastle built up a bit of momentum with their results before the international break and now they have got a run of games where they will expect to pick up more points. I don't see them winning on Monday night, though.

Burnley got a good point last time out at Leicester thanks to a determined defensive display and I think we will see more of the same here.

    Prediction: 1-1

"If Rafa Benitez does maintain Newcastle's momentum and ensures Premier League status, it will be an achievement to rival any of the managerial successes crafted over a long and illustrious career."

That's what our European football expert Balague reckons.

But if Rafa does manage to keep them up, will it be enough to ensure he remains at St James' Park?
