GOAL - Southampton 0-1 Manchester Citypublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

    David Silva (10 mins)

That was page one of the Manchester City playbook.

They take John Barnes' World in Motion advice - getting round the back of the Saints defence via a slick one-two between Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez.

The Portuguese pulls the ball back from the byeline to the edge of the six-yard box from where David Silva dispatches the finish.

    Simplicity executed brilliantly.

    Burnley 0-0 West Ham

Burnley are making the early running at Turf Moor.

Dwight McNeil's stooping header is palmed upward and away by Lukasz Fabianski.

The offside flag was up anyway, but that has given the home fans more to shout about.

  3. 'It was all about the pass'published at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender David Luiz told Sky Sports: "It is never easy to play here or control it here especially when they play long balls but we did well. We could have scored early but they also did a great match defensively which is why it was so difficult.

"[The goal was about] the connection, about training every day and understanding the philosophy. I just tried to put the ball in and time it for his run."

Speaking about his goal, Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante told Sky Sports: "It is a move I have tried in training. It doesn't work many times but David (Luiz) gave me a good ball and I am happy to score with my left foot and help the team win. It was all about the pass."

    Burnley 0-0 West Ham

Sean Dyche is standing hand on hips in front of the home dug-out barking out the early instructions.

And his team carve out an opening almost immediately.

Johann Gudmundsson feeds Dwight McNeil on the left and his low cross into the box finds Ashley Barnes.

Ten yards out, ball a bit behind him, the Burnley striker snaps a half-volley into the advertising hoardings.

Southampton's players have huddled up ahead of kick-off for some final collective words of motivation.

They have looked a more coherent and concerted bunch under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

  9. 'Chelsea were the better side'published at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic told Sky Sports: "I think today, for 75 minutes, Chelsea were the better side. We didn't create enough. We tried in the last 15 minutes but I think they deserved the three points.

"They have a lot of quality and they kept the ball well. We found it difficult to take the ball from them. They played a really good game and we look forward now."

Over at Turf Moor, Mark Noble and Tom Heaton get the nod from an official and march out onto the baize.

  11. Top of the tablepublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

Southampton v Man City (14:15 GMT)

    Table

This is the title defence maths that Manchester City are looking at.

It is considerably trickier than on the evening of 4 December.

Then they were five points clear of Liverpool after a win over Watford.

Since then defeats by Chelsea, Palace and Leicester have left them playing catch-up.

But with Liverpool to come to the Etihad on 3 January, they could boomerang right back into contact with the Reds.

A quick hop over to our 14:15 GMT kick-offs.

Manchester City - 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool having played a game less - could really do with a win away to Southampton after losing three of their last four league games.

Elsewhere Burnley - three points and a whole lot of goal difference from safety - attempt to stop a rot that has seen them win only one of their last 12 in the top flight. They are at home to West Ham.

Palace did not exploit Connor Wickham's strengths when he came on. He is bigger than David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger. He is not a natural finisher, but he can ruffle a few feathers.

It would have been a travesty had Chelsea failed to come away with all three points though. There was only one team who came here to play.

  14. Postpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

The result sees Chelsea move to within a point of Man City in third and two behind second-placed Spurs.

More crucially, they have opened up a five point gap between themselves in fourth and Arsenal in fifth.

The only negative for the Blues is that Olivier Giroud is hobbling out of the ground with an ice pack on his ankle.

Chelsea have the ball, and if they keep it, they will take all three points.

  17. Postpublished at 91 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

Why didn't they do this sooner?

Palace are flooding forward now and Chelsea are beginning to look shakey at the back.

They win a free-kick by the touchline, and it's another chance to put the ball into the box, but Chelsea stand tall and clear their lines.

That was the chance for Crystal Palace. The doorman-like figure of Connor Wickham got the knockdown from James Tomkins, but just leaned back and hit the ball clean over the top.

  19. CLOSE!published at 89 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

Palace have waited until the final minute of normal time to have their best opportunity.

The hosts launch another long ball into the area and James Tomkins nods it down.

The loose ball falls to substitute Connor Wickham six yards out, but he lashes at it and it flies over the bar.

Alvaro Morata has had a couple of really poor touches since he replaced Olivier Giroud for Chelsea.

He has given the ball away and put his team under pressure. Maurizio Sarri will be furious.
